Predator’s foreign policy by Emma Schneider

What emerges is not strategy rooted in diplomacy or humanitarian concern but the unmistakable logic of imperial appetite.

TSMC delays second Japan plant as US expansion takes priority Investing.com -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing is postponing construction of its second plant in Japan, partly due to accelerated funding for its U.S. expansion plans ahead of potential Trump administration tariffs, according to the Wall Street Journal. The schedule change reflects how President Trump’s trade policies are redirecting some investment toward the United States at the expense of allied nations. Major technology companies have made commitments to increase U.S. production of artificial-intelligence servers that are currently manufactured in locations such as Mexico and Taiwan. TSMC, which has a market capitalization of nearly $1 trillion, is highly sought after by regions worldwide for investment. The company, which serves clients including Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), is viewed as strategic by the U.S., Japan, Europe, and its home base of Taiwan, all of which have provided financial support for TSMC’s expansion efforts. Westinghouse pursues US nuclear expansion after Trump orders, FT says (Reuters) -Nuclear equipment supplier Westinghouse is in talks with U.S. officials and industry partners about deploying 10 large reactors, in response to presidential executive orders, the Financial Times reported on Sunday, citing the company’s CEO. President Donald Trump’s executive orders, which were published on May 23, directed the government to cut down on regulations and fast-track licences for reactors and power plants to shrink a multi-year process to 18 months. Dan Sumner, Westinghouse interim chief executive, told the FT that the company was "uniquely positioned" to deliver the president’s agenda because it had an approved reactor design, a viable supply chain and recent experience of building two of its AP1000 reactors in Georgia. "There is active engagement with the administration, including key points of interface with the loan programmes office, recognising the importance of financing to the deployment of the model," he told the FT. Westinghouse did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside regular business hours.

Amazon’s Zoox to scale up robotaxi production for US expansion, FT reports (Reuters) -Amazon’s self-driving start-up Zoox will increase production next year as it ramps up plans for a commercial rollout of its robotaxi fleet in the U.S., the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. The company will open a new site in California’s Bay Area to expand its footprint beyond a small production facility in Fremont, Zoox co-founder Jesse Levinson told the newspaper. Zoox will use the facility to increase its fleet, having deployed about two dozen bespoke test vehicles across six U.S. cities so far, Levinson told FT. The firm plans to launch public rides in Las Vegas this year, followed by San Francisco, FT said, adding that the new site will enable Zook to get "ready to make hundreds and then thousands" of its custom-built robotaxis. Zoox and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment outside regular business hours. U.S President Donald Trump’s administration said last month it aims to speed up deployment of self-driving vehicles by exempting some from certain safety requirements and easing rules requiring reporting of safety incidents. Car manufacturers including Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Google-owned Waymo develop autonomous vehicles for the robotaxi market. U.S. auto regulators have previously opened investigations into self-driving vehicles operated by GM’s Cruise, Waymo, and Zoox.

Primark committed to US expansion despite tariff uncertainty, says boss LONDON (Reuters) -Associated British Foods’ Primark clothing retail business is committed to expanding in the United States despite President Donald Trump’s erratic approach to tariffs, its boss said on Tuesday. Primark’s U.S. business accounts for about 5% of the unit’s total sales. It currently trades from 29 stores in the U.S. and has signed an additional 18 leases. Trump’s stream of tariff announcements, roll-backs and exemptions has left some firms wary of committing to expansion. However, AB Foods (LON:ABF) chief executive George Weston said Primark was "absolutely" committed to a plan to have 60 U.S. stores by 2026 and remains confident it can succeed in a market that has been a graveyard for some of Britain’s biggest retailers, including Marks & Spencer (OTC:MAKSY) and Tesco (OTC:TSCDY). Weston told Reuters in an interview that Primark would take the "(tariff) hits where we have to take them and before we take more substantive actions wait to see where we really are." But he said Primark could benefit from Trump’s move to end the "de minimis" duty exemption, which allows shipments worth less than $800 duty-free entry to the U.S. and has helped companies like Shein keep prices low. "De minimis imports in the U.S. are very, very large, they supply a lot of Americans who don’t know about Primark yet but are looking for value," he said. Weston was speaking after AB Foods reported first half results.
