A group of students is excavating an archaeological trench on the site of Bowness-on-Solway Roman fort. The group is very wet and muddy, and one digger is struggling to lift a bucket containing soil from the trench. Dr Tim Potter and Dr David Shotter, the two archaeologists in charge of the excavation watch the progress of the work from the top of the spoil heap to the right of the trench. Most are bent over in the trench either shovelling earth or troweling, but one student stands in the middle ground, looking at the camera. Everyone is well wrapped against the cold.
