Well, a very happy VE Day to all! 80 years since Victory in Europe Day! Let us remember who the war was being fought against, in an era that again feels under threat from the sort of people that were beaten on this day! Fight fascism! #VEDay #VEDay2025 #HappyVEDay #HappyVEDay2025

Special to walk along the Mall near Buckingham Palace on 80th anniversary of VE Day celebrations.

My blue jacket & red top mirrors our Union Jack flag (though can we only call it a Union Jack under certain circumstances ?!) 🇬🇧

🌍 On the Echoes of History: A Moment to Reflect 🌍
Today, we remember VE Day, a turning point in human history. May 8th, 1945, marked the end of World War II in Europe, a victory over tyranny and despair. But as we honor those who fought for peace, we must ask ourselves: What have we truly learned?
In 2025, the world finds itself repeating certain patterns. Tensions rise. Divisions deepen. The quest for power continues to blind us to the shared humanity that unites us all. We can almost hear the whispers of history, calling us to wake up — to see the lessons written in the ashes of the past.
History is not just a collection of events; it is a mirror, reflecting the choices we make, the paths we follow, and the consequences of ignoring our shared responsibility. In every generation, the shadows of war and peace stretch across the globe. And yet, despite the clear lessons of the past, we often find ourselves trapped in the same cycles.
Is it possible we have forgotten the true meaning of victory? 🌹
Victory is not merely the absence of war; it is the presence of understanding, compassion, and the courage to face our collective flaws. It is the willingness to rise above divisions and seek unity in a world that is still divided.
The question today is not simply: What have we overcome? — but rather: What are we still willing to overcome? Can we break free from the patterns of history that chain us to old conflicts and divisions, or will we let the lessons of VE Day fade into the background of our noise?
Let us not celebrate history blindly, but instead, let it awaken us to the need for change. The victory of the past is not a final chapter — it is an invitation.
What will we choose, as the world stands on the edge of tomorrow?

80 years, VE Day.
In 2025, the world still wrestles with division, fear, and power.
To remember is not to dwell — it's to learn, to guard peace, and to choose differently.

Here on #VEDay2025, I’m enjoying my afternoon in the back yard, wood fire roaring in the Weber grill (to reduce to coals), a fine cigar, and a nice glass of #bourbon - all in memory to those who once rid Europe of #fascism. Cheers, warriors.

I was in Gdansk over the weekend.

A beautiful and vibrant city, rebuilt following its near-total destruction at the end of WW2.

Remembering today the catastrophe of war, the preciousness of democracy, the fragility of our freedoms, and the bravery of those who fought to change things.

Fantastic to start #VEDay2025 at the Yorkshire Air Museum earlier today.

It was an honour to play a part in the Thanksgiving Service by giving a reading.

War memorials sprang up across the Met's buildings post-war (such as this one now on loan from our collection to Charing Cross), a booklet was published in 1947 and a roll of honour for both world wars was inaugurated at @westminsterabbey.bsky.social in 1950. #VEDay #VEDay80 #VEDay2025 #MetAtWar
