And, #VacationInCanada!

And that candy comes in a huge variety of shapes and sizes that would take most people by surprise. And the stories behind them…. That’s what inspired my #VacationInCanada posts and blogs.

A child walks away from the viewer on a broad, nearly flat expanse of bare rock fringed by small conifer trees. The sky shows areas of clear bue (grey here, as the photo is in black & white), punctuated by billowy clouds.
For #Stunday this week:
The Canadian Shield, a geological shield that stretches across a huge area of eastern, central and northern Canada, from the Great Lakes to the Arctic Ocean. Total area roughly 8,000,000 sq. km.
This part is near Yellowknife, NWT.
#VacationInCanada
A vast landscape is viewed from a distance. In the background is a valley of arid, rough, badland rock formations in varying shades of yellow, ochre, and red. The formations terminate in a broad, completely flat plateau above. In the foreground is the curve of a broad river, flanked by lush green vegetation. Above all is a clear blue sky.
Just discovered the #Stunday hashtag - what a great idea!
Naturally, I’ll pick a Canadian theme. Here’s Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta.

A pen and ink sketch in black and white of an ocean view looking out on St. Margaret’s Bay in Nova Scotia. It shows a tiny body of water sheltered by the rocky pier on the right and a curved shoreline on the left. There are big boulders on the left edge of the water where black big black birds sit drying their wings after diving. In the distance beyond the protected water, there are four different shorelines at varying distances seen across the bay. The water is pretty calm but some gentle waves flow into the shore. A distant sailboat, a buoy, a fisherman’s boat tethered to the pier, and cormorants sitting on the boulders to the left, complete the view.
The view from my friend’s deck in Hubbards, NS. There were at least 25 cormorants that hung out daily on the rocks drying their wings after deep diving for their supper. Each day, the ocean presents a different mood. I’d never tire of a view like this.

For my latest #VacationInCanada post, I've stayed closer to home. This one's an easy day trip from #Ottawa.
Happy long weekend, may you all visit a lovely Canadian place near you! 🇨🇦

Start your week by planning a trip to somewhere wonderful in Canada! My latest entry in the #VacationInCanada series:

And I have a few #VacationInCanada suggestions of my own, especially for those interested in history and architecture:

As holiday season hits high gear, it's time for another #VacationInCanada piece. My first from British Columbia: the historic mining town of Barkerville.
Special shout-out to @forrestpass.bsky.social, who has spent many memorable days there.

More Canadians refusing to visit the U.S.!!!

Vive le Canada ❤️🇨🇦🍁
Big deal. #VacationInCanada is about more than finding the cheapest flight. It's about seeing who we are and what we have, and why it's worth keeping - and worth paying for.

And speaking of Haines Junction, in case you missed it:

An almost-deserted highway stretches into the distance towards a range of snow-capped mountains.
For #MountainMonday: the Alaska Highway, heading west from Whitehorse towards Haines Junction (Yukon).

Interesting idea. I'm doing my bit - plan to be at a National Historic Site in a couple of days. Stay tuned.
#VacationInCanada Even if it's a working 'vacation', as it is for me.

We strongly suggest you'all do stay home. It's not because we dislike you; It's because we do like you. We don't want DJT's craziness to bleed onto you. #DontTrustOurGovt #VacationInCanada
Dear fellow Canadians if you have not already done so please cancel any and all plans to travel to the U.S.! The government is attacking its own citizens! Stay safe, stay home!

I've collected all my #VacationInCanada blogs to date in one place on the Carleton University website.
They'll never show more than the tip of the iceberg, but if they give just one person an incentive to travel in Canada instead of elsewhere, I'll be thrilled!

Lucky indeed! It's one of the most beautiful areas in the country. Of course, not everyone can live there, but many can visit, if they decide to #VacationInCanada.
A row of carved Haida totem poles, weathered and silvery from age, stand in a grassy clearing in front of a dense wall of conifers.
View from high above of the town of Dawson, Yukon, and its surroundings. The town is a relatively tight cluster of mostly small buildings on a confined area of flat land. In front is a wide river (the Yukon), and behind is a pair of gently sloping mountains.
A sequence of locks with V-shaped gates, flanked by historic and modern buildings, recedes toward a wide river in the distance.
The warm, early morning sun his a group of Brightly coloured (red) wooden vernacular buildings. They sit on the edge of a calm harbour, on the surface of which they are crisply reflected. A long wooden wharf projects from the buildings over the water. A rope dangling from an out-of-frame ship curves into the frame from the left.
Happy #WorldHeritageDay, Canada!
Here are four of the country's remarkable @unesco.org World Heritage Sites:

Canadians has never weaponized their economy against Americans. Americans must support Canada despite the rhetoric coming out of Washington. #VacationInCanada
Why not start the week with some light lunchtime reading? My latest #VacationInCanada post is about the (almost) ghost town of Dorothy, Alberta. I first learned about it in a @theglobeandmail.com piece by @carrietait.bsky.social.
I had a lot of fun with this one....

Multi-colored cliffside with layers of red, grey and beige leading to the ocean. At the foot of the cliff is a flat rock surface allowing great access to the cliff at low tide.
Come and see some of the cool things that make up part of our UNESCO Geopark - like Brook Point, off the King's Cove Lighthouse Trail.
These multi-colored rocks are around 565,000 years old!
