Il rendering mostra un totale di quasi 12.700 asteroidi scoperti con Rubin nell’arco di 1,6 anni: 73 sono stati scoperti durante le prime osservazioni di test effettuate con la Commissioning Camera di Rubin alla fine del 2024 e pubblicati come parte del Data Preview 1 nell’estate 2025; 1.514 sono stati scoperti durante le osservazioni del First Look nell’aprile e maggio 2025; e gli oltre 11.000 asteroidi più recenti sono stati individuati durante le campagne di ottimizzazione osservativa nell’estate 2025. Questi rappresentano le posizioni degli oggetti al momento della loro scoperta. Nel tempo trascorso da allora, gli oggetti hanno continuato le loro orbite attorno al Sole, disperdendosi rispetto ai sottili “fasci a matita” visibili in questa rappresentazione. Distribuzione orbitale di 11.097 asteroidi appena scoperti dall’NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory nell’Early Optimization Survey. Ogni punto rappresenta un oggetto appena scoperto, tracciato in base alla distanza media dal Sole (in unità astronomiche, dove 1 AU è la distanza tra la Terra e il Sole) e all’eccentricità orbitale, cioè quanto l’orbita è “allungata”. La parte sinistra mostra gli oggetti del Sistema Solare interno su scala lineare; la parte destra si estende verso il Sistema Solare esterno su scala logaritmica. La maggior parte delle scoperte appartiene alla fascia principale degli asteroidi (10.279 oggetti), con popolazioni significative nella fascia esterna (234) e tra gli oggetti che incrociano l’orbita di Marte (103). Oltre Nettuno si trovano 380 oggetti trans-nettuniani (TNO), inclusi due con orbite estremamente allungate (eccentricità > 0,9) che raggiungono circa 1000 volte la distanza Terra-Sole. Gli asteroidi near-Earth includono gli Amors (27), Apollos (5) e Atens (1), che appaiono a basse distanze medie dal Sole. Completano il quadro le comete accoppiate a Giove (57), i Centauri (7), un troiano di Giove e tre troiani di Nettuno. Il pattern nella distribuzione degli asteroidi della fascia principale è causato da regioni scarsamente popolate in cui le ripetute perturbazioni gravitazionali di Giove hanno progressivamente “ripulito” lo spazio.
