Cancel culture vs. execute culture Just after the Russian invasion, the novelist Victoria Amelina wrote an essay warning that Ukraine’s cultural community faced the same fate as the Executed Renaissance in the 1930s. On 1 July, Amelina herself died of injuries sustained in Russia's missile attack on a restaurant in Kramatorsk.

A photo of Victoria Amelina’s posthumously published war diary next to my in-progress cup of coffee.

A photo of the editor’s note, which really drives home how the author’s life and work was cut short. It reads:

Editors' Note
At the time of Victoria Amelina's death, the manuscript of the would-be book was left unfinished. While the author managed to finalize the overall structure and write up some of the chapters (mostly in part I and the conclusion), other sections remain unfinished. They are composed of unedited notes, reports from field trips with no context, or limited to just a title. The editorial group's strategy is to minimize their intrusions into the original manuscript and, where such intrusions are impossible to avoid, make them explicit to the reader. Such intrusions are explained below.
<<... > indicates excerpts found by the editors in the older versions of the manuscript and pasted into the final draft.
Gray text indicates rough unfinished notes left by the author in
the draft of the manuscript.
Italic passages are fieldwork reports and other documents pasted by the author into the manuscript.
[... ] indicates clarifications added by the editors.
[Editors' note] in the body of the manuscript signals to the reader a switch from the polished text by the author to a rough draft or contextualizes the section of the manuscript that follows.
All footnotes are inserted by the editors to add context or to comment on the state of the manuscript (for example, sentences left unfinished and connections undeveloped).
All the fragments in Ukrainian have been translated into English by Daisy Gibbons. All the poetry translations from Ukrainian into English have been made by Uilleam Blacker.

I’ve been anxiously awaiting for my copy of this to come in to my local bookstore. Worked out perfect for #InternationalWomensDay.

I’m sure this is going to be a tough read. Even the editor’s note is devastating.
