Hibiscus is my favorite flower to photograph because I started getting into photography by taking mobile phone photos in a family garden in Sri Lanka, which had very photographic varieties of hibiscus.

Thulusdhoo, Maldives. Noon off the old beach road. An old school sitting area set up in a small lane. It’s covered from the sun by a roof made of old sail cloth held up by four steel poles. In the foreground are two three-seater joalis and one two-seater joali. In the middle is a homemade table made out of plywood and steel construction bars. In the background is a simple metal undhoali held up by marine rope on a steel frame. On the undhoali is a wooden box used to store local pa-an chewing material like Areca nuts and Betel leaves and related stuff. Behind the undhoali hanging from the top of the frame are, from the left, a brass kettle, an old school radio, a lantern, and a retro looking fm radio. And from the right side are, a watering can, a tin container that is attached to a pole and used to get water from wells, and a metal-bladed utensil to cut the nuts into fine slices.

Thulusdhoo, Maldives. The old Ficus tree, bathed in a softer light, showcases its natural browns and greens, accentuated by sunlight and shadows on its trunk. It stands as one of the two remaining ancient Banyan trees on the island. I’m concerned about its potential removal, so I make sure to capture as many photos as possible. Since the tree is situated between my house and the beach, I pass by it at least twice a day on most days.
