Eliceo Lopez (0062) - Voces Oral History Center Eliceo Lopez, interviewed on February 26, 2001, recounted his experiences during World War II. Born in Ganado, Texas, he joined the service after his father's death in 1941. He trained at Camp San Felipe and Fort Ord, California, before deploying to Guadalcanal, New Caledonia, and Bougainville. Lopez described combat, including a near-death experience from a shell hitting his helmet. He served in the Philippines and Japan, where he faced ongoing dangers. Post-war, he settled in Austin, attended vocational schools, and worked in woodworking for 55 years. Lopez emphasized the importance of education and the progress made since his youth. Lopez reflects on life lessons learned from his father and military service, emphasizing the importance of staying calm, not offending others, and living responsibly. He credit his father's advice, which initially seemed nonsensical but proved beneficial over time. Eliceo also mentions his father's insistence on education and how it has helped him stand his ground in life. He express gratitude for the opportunity to share his experiences, acknowledging the rarity of such conversations and the potential benefits to others.

Recalling his father’s insistence on education, Lopez used the GI Bill for vocational school and studied to be a radio technician.

Santos Deliz (0026) - Voces Oral History Center On March 29, 2001, Mr. Santos Deliz was interviewed in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Mr. Deliz shared his childhood memories in New York City, including living in Manhattan and the Bronx, and his experiences in two orphanages. He detailed his service in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the U.S. Army, where he served as a frontline cook, and his interactions with German and Italian prisoners. Santos also discussed his post-war experiences, including his return to New York City and the challenges of readjusting to civilian life. He then recounts his post-war experiences, including living in a car, attending jewelry school with GI Bill support, and working with UPS. He describes his business success, including selling watches and rings, and his role as president of the Puerto Rican Social Club Gardenia. He married in 1964 and moved to Puerto Rico in 1976. He also highlights his daughter's education and business ventures, his grandchildren's intelligence, and his satisfaction with serving in the military. He criticizes the influx of immigrants to Puerto Rico, believing it negatively impacts the local economy and job market.
