This marvelous and somewhat puzzling roadcut crops out at Union Pass in Mohave County, AZ (35.21851 N, -114.39145 W). Geologist Shaun Willsey did a fine job describing the volcanic rocks in his ‘Random Roadcuts’ video series (www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgdv...). #VolcanicTuff #Miocene

A photo at dawn with captions.
The main subject is a tall buff or tan colored pillar, that rises from a forested hillside and continues above the top of the hill and all the trees. It is lit by the rising Sun on it's left side. The forest below it is in complete shade, in between the dark green conifer trees, patches of white snow appear. The sky behind the pillar is a cloudless pale blue. To the right of the pillar is more of the same formation as the pillar (volcanic tuff), but this outcrop is more level with the ridge line, and resembles more of a cliff.
In the sky next to the pillar is the caption "Steins Pillar". Below the ridgeline, and on top of the trees it's another caption, "A 350 ft tall, 40 million year old, volcanic ash deposit from an ancient extinct caldera near Prineville Oregon"

I don't believe I've done a #RockinTuesday prompt post.
Ok, done did it!
Not a lot of preamble for this winter shot. I did #hike to the base of the pillar long before dawn, but that's another photo share. 😄
