Thread/ my last stop in Kansas City for #WHA2024 was the Missouri River. A sign told the historical importance of the River to the city & mentioned Indian Removal Act process of removal in passive voice. This silence is violence.

#WHA2024 was amazing & I really loved being there and seeing everyone.

A thought though: it is still pretty hard to be disabled in these spaces. If we’re going to keep doing conferences & keep talking equity we need to make it possible for people who need to mask to socialize over meals/drinks. 1/

The University of New Mexico is in Booth 209 at the Western History Association 2024 conference. The booth has two tables displaying over sixty books about the American west, including The Poetics of Fire: Metaphors of Chile Eating in the Borderlands, by Victor Valle. The Poetics of Fire has been selected for the 2024 David J. Weber Prize for the best book on Southwestern America from the Western History Association!
