#wicopvarenden also shows the strong involvement of women in Amsterdam's maritime sector. Especially in the temporary housing of foreign sailors, usually in small lodgings in different parts of the city. For ex. 1/3 of the sailors on the ship the Blue Lion (1636), owed a debt to a female innkeeper.

Who were the sailors and soldiers who left for Brazil, Caribbean islands, Africa and New York in the service of the Dutch West India Company (WIC) in the #17thcentury? Until recently we didn't know much about them, thanks to the new database #wicopvarenden, this will change.
