A desert landscape taken by means of phone imaging from a place called Skunk Ridge that lies on the furthest north end of Utah's Cedar Mountains. The scene overlooks some dry desert scrub/plant growth, and a nearby row of very rugged & dark rocks. Beyond that is a broad, dry valley called Puddle Valley. The low-lying Grassy Mountains provide us with a deep blue & purple horizon. We are looking roughly west northwest in direction.

Here, we are looking southward from a place called Skunk Ridge, again, towards the northern end of Utah's Cedar Mountains. There's dry desert scrub brush & grasses in front of part of this very rough, rocky ridge. The mountains are just beyond the rugged rocks. Off in the distance are Ripple Valley & a very faint Granite Peak, on the horizon.

-Looking north across a winding, rocky road leading slowly down & northeast-ward, we see the north end of Utah's Lakeside Mountains. It's a rugged scene of desert scrub and rocks. This is also a view of the very northern end of Skull Valley, and the arc of a branch of the Union Pacific Railroad can faintly be seen just beyond the disappearing dirt road. This branch of railroad tracks leads to some mining operations up in the mountains. Again, we are on top of Skunk Ridge at the northern end of the Cedar Mountains. It's dry & windy.

Preserving the path: how BWAC volunteers maintain 200 miles of wilderness The Boundary Waters offers numerous hiking trails that draw backpackers to beautiful, remote sections along wilderness lakes. While the trails are rustic, multiple trail-clearing crews manage them in partnership with the USFS–Superior National Forest. One of those volunteer groups, the Boundary Waters Advisory Committee, recently posted upcoming trail-clearing opportunities. We also asked them about improvements made over the past year and what volunteers can expect when they sign up. Miles of wilderness trail Throughout the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, there are about 200 miles of hiking trails. Some are short and take only an hour or so to explore, while others are multi-day adventures. They are wild and remote, covering all parts of the almost 1.1 million-acre wilderness. Volunteers work with crew leaders provided by the BWAC and train to use clearing tools such as saws, trowels, shovels, and clippers. For Wilderness to Remain Wild, It Must Remain Unmanipulated By Kevin Proescholdt, Wilderness Watch A recent opinion article by a U.S. Forest Service research fellow supporting manipulating designated Wilderness areas showed a profound misunderstanding about Wilderness, its history, its stewardship policies, and the Wilderness Act itself. The author’s proposed solution would result in the loss of the very quality for which Congress designated Wildernesses: their wildness. The author suggests that we use active management interventions and manager-ignited fire in Wilderness to counter the impacts of climate change and to replicate Indigenous burning practices. In doing so, it reflects an all-too-common bias within the federal land management agencies for active management activities and projects. It also reflects a similar all-too-common hubris and arrogance in those same federal agencies that they know what’s best for Wilderness, that their choices for desired future conditions in Wilderness should take precedence over Nature’s choices. The proposal flies in the face of wilderness policy, history, and the provisions of the 1964 Wilderness Act itself. The one central purpose of the Wilderness Act, its prime directive if you will, is to preserve wilderness character, an area’s wildness.
