Sophia jumped. “What is going on?” she screamed. “It sounds like they're grinding up the kids in the classroom next door!” Some of her classmates snickered, while others flinched. “It's just the ventilation system pulling hot air from the heater into the classrooms,” Mr. Armstrong said. “I can assure you we have a strict no-grinding-kids policy here at John Adams.” There was more laughter.

Want a drink?” The inside of the cabin was appreciably more impressive than the outside. At least, what was in the cabin. Mounted overhead speakers vibrated the place with electronic music. The main room included a sleek kitchenette with a small wood fired oven and a pump sink. Screens and computers lined one corner. Colorful lights radiated through a doorway from another room in the back. “Water? Mead?” Justin offered them glass jars of each while he gave them a tour.
