Acres of heathland affected by wildfire A wildfire has affected more than seven acres (three hectares) of heathland in Surrey, according to firefighters. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service warned members of the public to avoid Whitmoor Common, north of Guildford, "due to high winds and changing smoke conditions" after dispatching six appliances to the blaze. It later said the wildfire was "under control" but urged nearby residents to keep doors and windows closed "while some smoke remains in the area". Surrey Wildlife Trust, which manages conservation at Whitmoor Common, also asked people to support fire crews by avoiding the area...

Climate-driven wildfires are becoming a major and immediate threat to species and biodiversity The study published in Nature finds that wildfire activities are expected to increase substantially across most regions by the end of this century, particularly in terms of burned areas and seasonal length. Increase in wildfire frequency and intensity will, in turn, increase the vulnerability of biodiversity and species in already vulnerable regions. Climate Change Impacts Are Pushing Species Beyond Their Tolerance Limits Climate change threatens species through two main pathways, according to the study. First, risks are imposed by gradual climatic shifts, including warming, changed precipitation patterns, and sea-level rise. These changes cause habitat loss and reduced suitability, pushing species beyond their physiological tolerance limits. Second, severe climate disturbance—including wildfires, heatwaves, and storms—are becoming increasingly frequent and are causing immediate and widespread mortality. According to the study, increases in the frequency and severity of wildfires are significant, and 15% of threatened species worldwide are already affected by changes in wildfire patterns. The study shows that future wildfire exposure will significantly increase for 9,592 non-marine species already threatened by more frequent or intense wildfires. Global burned areas are expected to rise by 9.3%, with about 84% of these vulnerable species facing higher risk, and around 40% of species in South America...

Snow to help buffer against threat of spring wildfires in N.L. but summer still risky, say scientists Snow lingering across Newfoundland and Labrador is a good sign for those worried about the possibility of spring fires but scientists say it’s too early to say if there will be another historic wildfire season this summer. Lucas Brehaut, a wildfire resilience research scientist with the federal government's Atlantic Forestry Centre, said there are three “main ingredients” for fires: an ignition event, warm and dry weather, and vegetation that fuels fire. “Historically we're seeing a trend in more severe fire years. Over the last 20 to 30 years, fires are happening more frequently and they're becoming more severe across the landscape,” Brehaut told CBC News. He added weather is the element that changes the most and anticipating what the upcoming wildfire season could look like is “tricky.” Moreover, Brehaut said in Atlantic Canada most fires are human-caused, as opposed to natural events like lightning. Snow on the ground will help prevent spring fires, which typically start as grass fires “because we have a lot of moisture ... in the soils that snow will slowly dissipate [into].” However, it might not help prevent summer wildfires, he said. “It's really hard to predict because there is so much annual or seasonal fluctuation...

Wildfire Explosion Leads to Higher Financing Costs for Vulnerable Cities Newswise — Wildfire season is approaching, threatening not only property and lives but municipal bond prices in the most vulnerable places. A study from the University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business found that communities more prone to wildfires pay higher interest rates on their municipal bonds as investors demand higher returns for the increased risk. Those cities pay an additional .36% in interest on average, which can translate to thousands if not millions of additional dollars depending on the size of the bond issue. That means taxpayers in the most affected cities had to pay an additional $4 billion in property taxes to cover the interest rate premium between 2000 and 2022. Since bonds are a major source of funding that cities use to pay for community development projects, those extra financing costs either fall on taxpayers or limit improvement projects. However, the study also found high risk communities can lower their financing costs by investing in wildfire mitigation efforts. “Risk management matters,” said Thomas Berry-Stoelzle, professor of finance and study co-author. “Investors want to know if cities are taking fire mitigation measures when they consider buying a municipal bond.” Wildfires have grown increasingly numerous and damaging in recent...

An explainable GeoAI framework for spatial assessment of wildfire susceptibility in the Upper Ravi sub-basin, Indian Himalaya The Upper Ravi sub-basin is located in the northern region of Himachal Pradesh (HP), Punjab and the Southwestern region of Jammu & Kashmir, India, encompassing parts of Chamba, Kangra districts (HP) and some parts of Pathankot ( Punjab ) and Kathua district of Jammu & Kashmir (Fig. 1). The region covers an area of 5759 km2. Geographically, it lies between 32°46′34″– 33°01′5″N latitudes and 75°39′– 77°45′E longitude. Ravi River originates from Bara Banghal at an elevation of 4229 m above mean sea level (MSL) and flows through steep hills in a meandering and circling rhythm. This region is characterized by continuous mountainous topography with elevations ranging from 395 m to 6095 m above MSL and slopes reaching up to 70 degrees (Fig. 1). The total population is approximately 442,650, found up to an elevation of 3000 m. The annual rainfall ranges from 696 mm to 1480 mm. The highest recorded temperature in July is 39 °C, and the lowest recorded temperature in winter is − 1°C25. Climatically, the lower part of the basin has a semi-tropical climate, while the central and northern sections experience a semi-arctic climate. Material For the susceptibility of wildfire, we used 16 conditioning factors from the...
