Calling on chronically ill and neurodiverse artists for "The Woman of Color Healthcare Library"
1. Are you a POC artist navigating ADHD, autoimmune disease, or other chronic illness or neurodivergent experiences--especially those conditions that are often contested, misunderstood, or dismissed in medical settings? We have collected over 500 WOC's stories that speak to the difficulty of seeking care and support while navigating structural bias and cultural stigma. To bring these (counter)narratives to life, we are commissioning 20 women or assigned female at birth artists to create visual interpretations of these stories in the form of a book cover. We encourage artists with a range of experience to apply, including those that enjoy creating artworks but may not consider themselves an 'artist.' 2. Each artist will select a story excerpt and create a single visual interpretation of the book cover that matches the story. Artists may work in any medium--including but not limited to painting or drawing (realist, comic, abstract, painterly, diagrammatic, digital, watercolor, collage, textile, photography, etc.) as long as a high quality digital image of the book cover can be transferred to the project team. The final book cover will be featured on a public Instagram account dedicated to the project, with full artist credit and optional links to your accounts or portfolio depending on your goals and comfort. With your permission, your artwork may also appear in academic publications or educational materials. 3. Artists will be paid $100 for their work. If this resonates with you and you'd like to participate, please email us at megan.cardwell@villanova.edu with: a brief introduction to you and your art practice; a link to your portfolio or 2-3 sample images of your artwork; a short note on why this project speaks to you; any access needs or questions you have. 4. We aim to work with care, flexibility, and mutual respect, and we deeply value the lived experiences you bring to this project. We would love for you to share this call with interested others in your life
