On Dec. 16, 1897, WV’s last public hanging took place. John Morgan, convicted of murdering Chloe Greene and her kids, was executed in Ripley before a carnival-like crowd. The spectacle led WV to ban public hangings, mandating executions happen privately at Moundsville. #WVHistory #appalachia
