A watercolor of Sunny, the ocean sunfish (mola mola), shown in profile swimming leftward through a deep blue sea. The background is a textured Prussian Blue wash representing the water in the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Pelagic Tank. Sunny’s round, flat body is painted in soft greys with hints of green, gold, and pink light reflecting across her scales. Her large black eye and trailing fin stand out against the sea.

A stylized wolf howls in profile at the base of a large glowing moon. The moon is centered in the image, framed by rough, dark brushstrokes in Indigo and Burnt Umber that form a tunnel-like circle. The wolf is painted in angular, expressive strokes with Indigo. The entire scene is dramatic and moody, with high contrast and minimal color.

A whimsical watercolor painting of birds gathered beneath a leafy tree. The background is a soft blue sky filled with simple silhouettes of flying birds in blue and lavender tones. The tree is lush with green and blue foliage, accented by hints of pink. Beneath it, a variety of abstract and semi-abstract bird figures are painted in muted greys, blues, purples, and splashes of yellow and pink. Two prominent pink birds with long legs stand on the right. The ground level features layered and overlapping birdlike shapes, conveying a sense of assembly or meeting. Text written below the image reads: “WWM 23/31 Group + Mixed Greys 2025.07.23,” “Parlement [sic] of Birds, inspired by Charlie Jane Anders,” with the artist's signature at bottom right.

WWM25 Day 23: Parlement [sic] of Birds

Today’s prompt—“Group + Mixed Greys”—took me into a dreamy assembly of watercolor birds. Titled *Parlement [sic] of Birds*, this piece was inspired by the speculative and wildly imaginative writing of Charlie Jane Anders, who often explores themes of transformation, identity, and collective strength.

I envisioned a kind of surreal council under a large tree, where birds of all colors, shapes, and degrees of abstraction have come together. The mixed greys in the prompt gave me an opportunity to unify wildly different characters and tones, while still leaving room for some bright, whimsical color play. There’s something about the randomness of form in watercolor blobs that, once inked or shaped slightly, reveals life and personality. That’s the magic of this practice for me.

Some birds remain purely suggestive, just a sweep of color and shadow. Others—like the pink long-legged pair—stand out as focal points. In the tree above, pink blossoms and watching birds suggest a layered, lively space. The background wash kept it soft and airy.

This was such a joyful painting to make—almost like painting a dream parliament where stories are told by chirp and flutter.

A stylized watercolor kitchen interior with orange-toned cabinets and appliances. A green refrigerator stands on the right, a bright orange oven is centered, and a reddish-orange microwave is mounted above. The backsplash is a light blue wash. The entire scene has a soft, vintage aesthetic evocative of a 1970s kitchen.

"My Retro 70s Kitchen Is Done!" — WWM25 Day 24/31

A loving tribute to avocado green appliances and burnt-orange cabinetry, this playful watercolor channels the spirit of a 1970s kitchen renovation. The composition features a centered stovetop oven painted in a rich orange, flanked by warm wood-tone cabinets. Above it, a boxy microwave sits snugly between matching upper cabinets, rendered in loose sienna tones.

The true star, however, is the olive-green refrigerator on the right—a nod to the avocado color trend that dominated midcentury kitchens. Its flat facade and brown handles keep the shape iconic and bold. A cool blue backsplash spans the wall behind the appliances, providing welcome contrast and a hint of modernity.

The watercolor technique combines bright washes, minimal contouring, and expressive brush shapes. The edges remain soft and fluid, helping the colors vibrate against each other while preserving a charming, sketch-like quality.

This piece celebrates nostalgia with affection and a wink, fully embracing the prompt “Avocado” and showcasing how color can evoke an era.

Two small children in large navy bubble jackets face each other in a snowy field, each wearing a red Santa hat, yellow scarf, red-orange pants, and brown boots. Tall zigzag green trees frame them on both sides, and soft spatters suggest falling snow. The figures are symmetrical, creating a whimsical and festive winter scene.

WWM25 Day 22: Jacket and Phthalo Green

Today's watercolor piece is all about *volume* and *whimsy*. The Grantham twins appear again—this time in puffy bubble jackets so large they nearly swallow them whole! I used a deep mix of Phthalo Green and Alizarin Crimson to create a rich, shadowy navy tone for the coats. The hats, pants, and boots are kept bright and warm to balance the cold surroundings.

The trees were painted with fast, loose zigzags using juicy Phthalo Green creating a stylized forest that frames the twins like bookends. The snowfall was added with delicate spattering after the paper dried.

This is one of my more playful takes this month and it makes me laugh every time I look at it. The exaggerated scale of the coats and the symmetry between the twins gave me just the right setup for a funny little winter tale.

Day 18, prompts "rigid" and Sepia. I painted a picture of some boulders in a forest, something out my memories of hiking around Estes Park, CO. The boulders are a paler sepia mix, some full dark sepia marking edges, cracks, and other shadows. The background is thick with tree trunks in light brown and olive greens, to show distance and give context and atmosphere. The foreground appears sandy, but there are red flowers sprouting up around the rocks. Text on the bottom reads: "2025-07-18 // WWM25 18/21" on the left, '"rigid" + Sepia' in the middle and my sigil on the right.

# WWM25 12/31 — “rumble” + Neutral Tint: Description & Analysis

This evocative watercolor captures the drama of a summer thunderstorm brewing over a field of tall grasses and wildflowers. The prompt word was *rumble*, paired with the pigment *Neutral Tint*, and both are interpreted literally and atmospherically.

A heavy sky dominates the composition. Neutral Tint, in layered washes, suggests storm clouds that hover low and thick, with white paper left exposed to indicate the last gaps of light before the downpour. Flashes of lightning etched with negative space cut through the sky, enhancing the mood of anticipation.

The landscape below is rendered in dark greens with scattered flecks of white to suggest Queen Anne’s lace or other field flowers. In the distance, a few rooflines in warm sienna provide a grounding horizontal, suggesting human presence bracing for the storm. The expressive strokes in the foreground grasses echo the tension in the sky.

Overall, this piece is a study in visual contrast—light and dark, stillness and movement, the hush before the rumble. It is emotionally resonant, technically bold, and narratively concise.

Painting of a bouquet of flowers sitting on a table in front of a window. The painting is very loose and full of energy. It features some large yellow and maroon day lilies, several other colourful flowers, and a largish spray of tiny white flowers all around. The bouquet is resting in a dark green glass vase.
