A lovely day to mow the home orchard at Limestone Hills- the autumn sun casts lengthening shadows from the apricot and pear trees, while The Deans hills make a jagged horizon. The river in its gorge runs unseen between us.
A big sky featuring squiggly lenticular clouds looms over the Deans - the range of hills that defines one side of the Waipara Valley
Yes, we have wind.

A piece of mudstone that has been shattered by freeze thaw cycles - or at least whose shattered status has been materially enhanced by the frost that's lingering in the Waipara riverbed at the moment.
Still life that rocks.

The view towards Mt Grey and Mt Brown from Black Estate in the Waipara Valley. The sky is a deep blue, but the air is chill.
Not a bad day in the Valley

A green glow tinged with red silhouettes the Canterbury foothills, while a galaxy (or several) look down at the photographer, who shivers.
This was about 9-30 pm, looking south from Laidmore Road in the Waipara Gorge. The lump on the right is Mt Grey (you can see the transmitter). Then I gave up to go to bed...

The Teviot hills are picked out by the last rays of the setting sun, while above them a truncated section of a rainbow gives the scene an unearthly glow...

January at the Hills was the coldest in at least 14 years (my records begin in 2011), at 14.9ºC. That's 2.5º lower than average (which is a *big* variance), 3.7º lower than last year, and 1.4º cooler than the previous low, set in 2014.

Waiting for Nadia Reid - not a bad spot!! #BlackEstate #Waipara
Are we as researchers not starting conversations in the community on tricky issues (eg. Gene editing, glyphosate)? Beyond adhoc sporadic efforts? How can we get & maintain social licence otherwise? #Waipara #Bioprotection21
