(And for more Boundary Road fun, I did another #WalkAroundTheCity pre-Bluesky - in 2022 - that covered this street. Searchable on Twitter.)

Today is #VancouverDay, and the incorporated city is turning 140+. But the history of settlement on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations goes back much, much further. 🧵

A few more related notes about him the urban history of #ReggioEmilia. Well, the map I used for my. #walkaroundthecity was from the 16th century, it looks like the hexagonal boundaries continued to define the city even into the late 19th and early 20th centuries as these more recent maps show.

I arrived in #ReggioEmilia yesterday for the #PlacemakingEurope conference. There is a bit of time yet before activities get underway, so this afternoon, I am going to take a #walkaroundthecity - with a focus on the historical boundaries of the old walled city.

Today's episode of #walkaroundthecity has the unfortunate task of bringing to a close my visit to #Amsterdam.

As with yesterday's jaunt, I'll be covering some parts of the city boundary on bike, and some parts on foot.

We'll start here, on the western side of the Amstel.

Today's (mostly) bike and #walkaroundthecity covered 40.7km, and another sizeable segment of the present-dayAmsterdam boundary.

And now it's time to catch a ferry! Today's #walkaroundthecity is finished! It was a slower, pokier walk... but I still managed to clock 20km.

Good afternoon! After yesterday's 48km #walkaroundthecity in #Amsterdam and #AmsterdamNoord, today is going to be a little more slow-paced.

I'm still in Broek en Waterland, and started with a #pannekoek brunch. Now it's time to head out and see how my hips and feet are faring!

Today's #walkaroundthecity took about 12.5 hours and covered 47.92 km, (about 49k) steps.

Time now for a bit of rest. I'm exhausted!

For now, my walk will head north east starting with the Durgerbammerdijk. My near term goal is to get to the north east corner of the city before curling westward across the top of the #Amsterdam municipality.

Okay #Amsterdam! It's time for me to get serious about a #walkaroundthecity.

Today, let's check out some of the edges of the current boundaries.

Now that we are walking 21st c lines, we can definitely start at Centraal. That's my old friend, Tram #2 in the background

Good morning! There are more boundaries to explore today in my #walkaroundthecity. Yesterday, I covered the 11th-14th centuries of Amsterdam's growth. Today, it will be segments from the 15th-18th centuries.

Which brings me back to my starting point - again! My walk this time took a couple of hours, and covered (with a few points of back-tracking), just shy of 4km.

And with that, I'll pause my exploration of Amsterdam's boundaries at the end of the 14th c.

I'll use the Zeedijk ("sea dike") for the boundary here... which gives me the opportunity to take a snap of this gem - the second of two remaining wooden buildings in #Amsterdam.

At this point, the boundary picks up at either Nieuwebrugsteeg or the Zeedijk - I'm not sure which. I'll start with the former for this boundary loop.

My boundary walk starts at the SE corner, at Landbrugsteeg - "land bridge alley", and Rokin. One obligatory selfie to kick things off - and then our first loop.

My plan is to do trace the early growth of the city by walking counter clockwise around several of Amsterdam's historical boundary lines. But first, I will start at the Amstel.

For today's #walkaroundthecity, I am going to start, as I did yesterday, near the Munttoren - actually one of the old city gates (*and* briefly a mint).

When the scale of the buildings is relatively constant, the difference of their age seems to disappear. They cohabit the street amiably, each offering a bit of their personality to passersby - no one building overwhelms the other.

Across from where I am staying, the buildings of Bosboom Toussaintstr. are chamfered. The 'opening' creates an opportunity for a small plaza.

I'm in #Amsterdam for a few days. It's the city's 750th birthday.

To mark the occasion, I thought it could be fun to to take a #WalkAroundTheCity, explore how the boundaries have changed, and see what I find along the way. #wandelenrondomdestad #walkaroundamsterdam

... Because I am now, after another 100 meters or so, at Spanish Banks Creek, my starting point! My #walkaroundthecity is now complete! 24.51 km. About 10.75 hrs, with lots of stops along the way.

Treating myself to a coke at the concession stand. Water too. And then, onward!

A little further north, rounding the bend, little stones painted to look like houses, a tree leaning at an impossible angle... and then, all at once, the skyline of the city comes into view.

At about 1:00, after backtracking a wee bit along the Foreshore Trail, I found a seat on a nice bench someone had constructed and had a bit of lunch.

A tranquil riverside view.

What's this? A ravine, and a little creek flowing below! Kind of hard to see in the pictures.

There is also more light coming through the trees. I am getting close to the lookout.

At SW Marine, I turn westward and walk along the northern edge of Musqueam 2. Another street without a sidewalk - this one busy with cars and trucks and cyclists. Someone did add a few tiles though.

I then follow the trail back into the park, and due west to the "other end" of the unwalkable portion of the city boundary. Remember the bramble I just mentioned? A wild and unruly mix of blackberry and bindweed.

At bout 100 m south on Imperial, the boundary heads E/W following the line between Camosun Park and athletic track/ Queen Elizabeth School and Camosun Bog.

For some reason, the athletic track shows up on Google map as "Courtenay Street." #walkaroundthecity
