It fell, blanketing beauty
and eyesore alike.
A veneer, a mask –

But so lovely.

So, so lovely
that the pitted ground
where the gas line
was mended is now
one with the untouched
green moss not far from
the gashes.

The yellow tape, fallen
and also gently covered
by the snow –

A warning we can no longer see;
and maybe we don't want to.

But oh, if you step there...
You'll know.

I walked for the first time
in years this evening
by myself after dark.

Something about the snow
made the darkness unimportant,
seemingly non-existent, even.

But it was still there,
threats and all.
