Medical checkup day. I hoped my poor eyesight would keep me in the rear. On paper, I'm almost a sniper; in reality, I can't see faces 3 meters away. Fear returns as the "light in the tunnel" fades.

British forces suffered >57,000 casualties on the 1st day of the Somme, July 1 1916. On July 2nd my grandfather, commanding the 6th CCS 75 km away wrote "The offensive ...on the Somme started yesterday...a good many wounded came in as a result...a good proportion of them bad cases".
