The Parable of the Old Man and the Young by Wilfred Owen (1893 - 1918). So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went, And took the fire with him, and a knife. And as they sojourned both of them together, Isaac the first-born spake and said, My Father, Behold the preparations, fire and iron, But where the lamb for this burnt-offering? Then Abram bound the youth with belts and straps, and builded parapets and trenches there, And stretchèd forth the knife to slay his son. When lo! an angel called him out of heaven, Saying, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, Neither do anything to him. Behold, A ram, caught in a thicket by its horns; Offer the Ram of Pride instead of him. But the old man would not so, but slew his son, And half the seed of Europe, one by one.
This is a Wilfred Owen poem I had not read before, but is very good.

Image shows detail from a handwritten letter by Edward Thomas to his friend and fellow poet, Gordon Bottomley. The text is as follows: Rose Acre, Bearsted, Nr. Maidstone 17.X.1902 Dear Gordon Bottomley, I have just received your letter: I cannot thank you for it more plainly than by saying that I can write back as easily as wall makes an echo. But I am in the midst of a heavy piece of work [reviewing] and must not spend any time on your letter and your book, though my thoughts are there – I opened the play and saw …Past where the imaged man shakes like a soul Pausing in death between two unknown worlds

I wrote this a few years back now but it still expresses my great love and respect for that generation, and an abiding horror of all war. #RemembranceSunday #RemembranceDay #LestWeForget #poetry #warpoets stephencarverauthor.wordpress.com/2016/07/01/s...

Based on her book Tumult and Tears, this fascinating discussion challenges traditional narratives and sheds light on women’s overlooked stories.

"Several writers said poetry had proved to be the literary genre best suited to war... allowing poets to react to the daily tragedies of conflict ... in a few stanzas."

I’m very pleased with the opening track on this. Chris has done a smashing job. The story is loosely based on Wilfred Owen’s war experience. #poppyappeal #poppyappeal2023 #WilfredOwen #warpoets
