Image shows detail from a handwritten letter by Edward Thomas to his friend and fellow poet, Gordon Bottomley. The text is as follows:

Rose Acre, Bearsted, Nr. Maidstone
17.X.1902

Dear Gordon Bottomley,
I have just received your letter:
I cannot thank you for it more plainly than by saying that I can write back as easily as wall makes an echo.
But I am in the midst of a heavy piece of work [reviewing] and must not spend any time on your letter and your book, though my thoughts are there – I opened the play and saw
…Past where the imaged man shakes like a soul
Pausing in death between two unknown worlds

Can you palaeography lovers help us out with this word? It should be a duration (of illness) - usually along the lines of 3 months, 4 years, instantaneous etc. Could be 'unknown' but we have to squint reeeaalllyy hard! What do you think?

All via the magic of #transcription of course 😉 @gwentarchives.bsky.social #TranscriptionTuesday

She writes... “Wednesday 17th, passed through the Straits of Messina at 6 a.m. at the entrance are the much dreaded Rocks of Scylla & Charybdis”
🐬🐺🐬🐺🐬🐺 "Charybdis is represented in Homer’s Odyssey as a mountain with a Wolf’s body & Dolphin's tail...” #TranscriptionTuesday

According to the Pontypridd Observer, at the school’s first Open Day in 1964, parents were “well pleased” 😊
