It was on February 10, 1919, that the first official dependent ship, the Tunisian, arrived after WWI. An Order in Council was passed in January with plans to bring soldiers' families home to Canada. Many of these were war brides. It was the first of 73 dependent ships in 1919. #WWI #FWW #Warbrides
It was 80 years ago on February 5, 1946, that the Mauretania set sail to Canada as the first official ship for war brides after the Second World War. #warbrides #WW2

My grandmother Grace married a Canadian soldier and arrived in Canada on this day in 1919 at the Port of Quebec. It was a 68-page letter written to her parents which began my interest in First World War Brides. . #warbrides #FWW www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7wU...
Mary Beattie McAusland and Clayton Harold Heipel. My mom and dad. Photo almost certainly taken in Scotland (likely Paisley), where they met and wed, thanks to WWII.

To the pioneering War Brides of the First World War. You inspire my love of history with your strength and determination. Thank you for making Canada your home despite the difficult times you may have endured. #internationalwomensday #warbrides #FWW

I am so thankful that grandmother recorded her thoughts on paper every day for 8 days while on her journey to Canada. The 68-page letter is an enduring legacy for my family, as well as the thousands of war brides who came to Canada after the First World War. #warbrides #FWW
In 1919, Canadian soldiers were waiting to be shipped back to Canada. Many, like my grandfather, met and married British women. Many young women also travelled to Canada to marry the soldier they met during the war. #warbrides #FWW
