A small waterfall is on the left side of the photo. The trail goes mostly behind the waterfall. Hikers will get wet. At least we did. A larger waterfall is in the center of the photo. The sandstone and shale strata are clearly shown on the right side.

This photo of the trail shows the beautiful craftwork of trail building in the gorge. The builders used the strata of rock to make the stairs needed in many places to hike in the 3 mile long gorge. The hikers in the photo give a sense of scale to the photo. A hiker in a bluegray shirt is at the bottom of some steps, and another hiker in a turquoise shirt is at the top of the steps. Further up the trail is a group of hikers under an overhang. The photo includes 1 or 2, depending on how you count such things, of the many waterfalls in the gorge.

The current Gorge Trail in the park was built by the CCC after the old trail and its bridges were destroyed by a flood in 1935. The photo shows the trail on the left side built on the sandstone and slate ledges and a low wall made of the native stone. There are many waterfalls and pools in the gorge. The leaves on the trees above the gorge are reflected in a pool in the photo.
