GOES-19 Satellite Begins Operations with Advanced Weather and Solar Monitoring GOES-19, the fourth and final satellite in NOAA’s GOES-R series, officially became operational on April 7, 2025, replacing GOES-16 as the primary Eastern Hemisphere weather satellite. Launched on June 25, 2024, by SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy, GOES-19 carries the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI), Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM), and a suite of space weather instruments including the newly added Compact Coronagraph (CCOR-1). The ABI delivers 16 spectral bands, faster scan rates, and higher spatial resolution, providing continuous monitoring of weather phenomena such as hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, and atmospheric rivers. The GLM tracks lightning in real time, offering critical insights into storm intensification. CCOR-1 monitors solar activity, detecting coronal mass ejections and even enabling amateur astronomers to discover dozens of previously unknown comets. GOES-19 operates from a geostationary orbit at 75.2°W and will serve for up to 15 years, ensuring continuity of weather observation and space weather monitoring. Its coronagraph also uniquely captures Earthshine and lunar passages, demonstrating both technological advancement and educational value. GOES-19 marks the end of the GOES-R program, with NOAA planning the next-generation GeoXO satellites for launch starting in 2032, which will focus on improved Earth observation without carrying space weather instruments.

Interesting view just now from Goes19. Snow way down into the SE states. Oh well, sucks that they don't embrace climate change.

There was #NoWARNING of the rampaging river in Texas. No warning enabling people to seek safer ground. They were enjoying the day when a wall of water struck them. The Trump gov't has also shut down our #WeatherSatellite which monitors 🌎 weather systems from space, the earliest warning of all. #news.
