A white middle-aged couple, my parents, sit on a dark green plaid couch against a wood paneled wall. The man, my dad, has dark hair and a gray beard and his eyes twinkle while his mouth forms a slight smile. He wears a dark crew neck sweater and grey pants. His arms are crossed along his midsection and his legs are crossed on a table. The woman, my mom, leans her head onto my dad’s shoulder with a broad smile. She wears a turquoise sweater with small white buttons and a black skirt and she leans her whole upper body into my dad while her legs are crossed at the knees. These are my heroes. They taught me integrity and humility and gave me a sense of humor. They demonstrated the importance of education, kindness, social justice, civic duty and philanthropy. They promoted a love of history, the Arts, architecture and music. Most of all, they embodied love and family. I miss them both.

Photograph of an amateur coloured pencil drawing in black, white and red pencil of the late Baron Field. Unfortunately, I was not at a stage of sufficiently careful observation or knowledge of the proportions of the face when I drew this a couple of years ago and one of his eyes is rather too small. However, I like the drawing in particular for the redness of his complexion and the familiarity of the tightly drawn pink lips of the gentle smile of an old man. May he rest in peace.

US Soldiers are depicted in a portion of the new WWI Memorial in Washington DC. The 58-foot-long bas-relief sculpture by Sabin Howard features 38 figures depicting the journey of a recurring American soldier. Here, we see the middle section that illustrates the battle portion of the soldier’s experience. Men in uniforms and helmets and holding rifles with bayonets climb and fall on top of each other in a push forward out of the trenches. The sculpture is a strip of dark grey and above it are the green leafy tops of trees against a light blue sky.
