Of the 100 #WeirdScienceMovies I watched this summer 48 of them came from the #TorontoPublicLibrary, either physical DVDs or through the streaming services they provide access to. Be sure to support and utilize your local #PublicLibrary, it’s one of our greatest inventions!
This summer I watched 100 #WeirdScienceMovies, 82 of them I’d never seen before (in bold). Some were as good as I expected, like Poor Things and The Shape of Water, others were nice surprises, like Upgrade, Linoleum, and The Man in the White Suit. How many have you seen?

The Circle (2017): Doesn’t capture the anxiety and stress of Mae’s perpetual online existence, and her gradual indoctrination into The Circle, that was so effective in the novel. The attempt at a “happy” ending was an odd choice. Not so good.

Man’s Best Friend (1993): a genetically engineered super dog goes on an adorable rampage. It’s like if halfway through “Air Bud” it turned into a bloody horror. Some of the effects are cute, might be worth a look for that, but that’s about it.

AfrAId (2024): didn’t have high hopes for this one, but I kinda liked it. It’s got some decent tension, but I kept anticipating a swerve at the end, like aliens or the supernatural. Turns out computers can just do anything, and they want to do evil.

Coma (1978): suspense, mystery, and a surprise Tom Selleck appearance. The image of the coma patients suspended from the ceiling is very striking, but that’s about the only fantastical element in this. Good performances all around. I liked it.

Predestination (2014): sci-fi noir with lots of twists and turns. It’s patient, letting you pick up on clues and unravel the mystery. I don’t know how I missed this when it came out, but I’m glad I finally checked it out. Really good.
#WeirdScienceMovies #Predestination
Futureworld (1976): Peter Fonda and Blythe Danner wander around a factory bickering for an hour and a half, stopping occasionally for a bit of action or a sci-fi set piece. The highlight is a Yul Brynner cameo in a pointless dream sequence.
#WeirdScienceMovies #Futureworld
Zapped (1982): there isn’t much of a plot, and it’s not particularly funny, but there are a couple of respectable FX set pieces, and Eddie Deezen shows up for a few minutes… so that’s something. Not surprised this didn’t become an 80s classic.

My movie theme for this summer is #WeirdScience. I’m watching movies about mad scientists, amazing inventions, strange discoveries, and experiments gone wrong. Have any suggestions for must-see #WeirdScienceMovies? Comment below and I’ll put them on the list!
