A couple of years ago, I started reading Wendell Berry’s Port William novels and some of his essay collections. His thoughts and values have made a tremendous impact on me, which I’ll try to explain briefly.

His book The Unsettling of America (1977) makes an argument for what people today might […]

The Want of Peace

All goes back to the earth, and so I do not desire pride of excess or power, but the contentments made by men who have had little: the fisherman's silence receiving the river's grace, the gardner's musing on rows.
I lack the peace of simple things.
I am never wholly in place.
I find no peace or grace.
We sell the world to buy fire, our way lighted by burning men, and that has bent my mind and made me think of darkness and wish for the dumb life of roots.

Sit and be still
until in the time
of no rain you hear
beneath the dry wind's
commotion in the trees
the sound of flowing
water among the rocks,
a stream unheard before,
and you are where
breathing is prayer.

The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on teh water, and where the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Not knowing which way to go isn’t always a failure.

Sometimes it’s the point where attention deepens — like a stream that finds its voice through resistance.

Berry steps around the question of success entirely.

The work isn’t about whether we’ll prevail — it’s about responding to what this earth asks of us, now.

A social post from @lifeboatacademy which says: “In the dark of the moon, in flying snow, in the dead of winter, war spreading, families dying, the world in danger, I walk the rocky hillside, sowing clover.” — Wendell Berry

A social post from @lifeboatacademy which says: “In the dark of the moon, in flying snow, in the dead of winter, war spreading, families dying, the world in danger, I walk the rocky hillside, sowing clover.” — Wendell Berry

At the solstice Berry offers this image: a body moving through cold and danger, sowing clover anyway.

Not denial.
Not optimism.
Just tending life in season.

Happy Solstice, steady, present.

A social post from @lifeboatacademy which says: “The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life.” — Wendell Berry

Soil is a reminder that life moves long before we can see it.
Care, patience, and steady tending create the flow we depend on.
Sometimes the work is happening underneath our feet.
