The official flag of the West Riding of Yorkshire, designed by Michael Faul. The flag is white, with an offset red cross in Scandinavian style, reflecting the Anglo-Scandinavian history of the region during the era when the Ridings were first established. The cross is charged with a “rose-en-soleil” device was first used by Edward IV upon his accession to the throne, combining the five-petalled White Rose of the House of York with the Sun emblem (with alternate straight & wavy rays) used by his royal predecessor, Richard II.

This flag is the official flag of the #WestRiding of Yorkshire, the Riding I was born in.

It was designed by Michael Faul, originally as a candidate for the flag of Yorkshire, as a whole, but lost out to the blander design of a white rose on a blue background.

The ornate-yet-rustic entrance to a large 17th century townhouse. An 'A Board' sign outside says 'Museum, FREE ADMISSION'.

The main entrance to 'The Folly', #Settle, in the historic #WestRiding. Built 1670s, GI listed. Now home to the Museum of North Craven Life. Well worth the inevitable bump to the head to enter. #AdoorableThursday #Yorkshire

A stone staircase in a ruined abbey, on a grey day.

The night stair at Sawley Abbey (Cistercian). For almost 400 years, the monks descended from the dormitory above at 3am, for the first service of the day. Historically part of the #WestRiding of #Yorkshire. #StaircaseSaturday
