Today, my lab @ UF is still asking #WhatKillsTrees, & I pour my heart & soul into developing research projects and funding that can provide a stable seat at the table for the next generation of scientists to push the boundaries of knowledge further (they're AWESOME, see: ecophyslab.com/people; 6/7).

Ph.D. student researching moment when droughts kill trees - Oklahoma State University William Hammond, a Ph.D. candidate in Oklahoma State University's Department of Plant Biology, Ecology and Evolution has spent the past few years researching the moment when trees stop living and star...

We learned a lot about #WhatKillsTrees. I turned the GRFP support into new knowledge, just as it's intended: news.okstate.edu/articles/art.... I did my level best to become a leader in my field. Since that first paper, I've authored or co-authored 40 more, studying how and why plants die.

I read everything I could about the process, had so many other graduate students, professors, and prior GRFP fellows provide guidance, support, copies of previously awarded applications. I stood on the shoulders of these giants, & developed the best proposal I could--asking #WhatKillsTrees. (3/7)

If you're waiting on a reply, a peer review, or other effort from me--please be patient. I urgently left to document a developing forest die-off event more intense than any I've seen. No obvious biotic agents, dead & dying include multiple Pinus & Juniperus, many Quercus, & shrubs. #WhatKillsTrees

Loss of Stomatal Regulation Sensitivity to CO2 and Reduced Xylem Hydraulic Conductivity Contribute to Long‐Term Tree Decline and Mortality Increasing drought threatens forests, but tree species respond differently. We examined how long-term drought and rising CO2 affect three Mediterranean tree species with different drought tolerances....

The ability of some trees species to respond to climate and/or CO2 may increase their survival under global change. Species with lower plasticity may face higher mortality. Our new study in @globalchangebio.bsky.social onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... #WhatKillsTrees

Had a great time talking #WhatKillsTrees at AGU this year! I shared my recent work with PhD student Emily Perry on plant thermal limits in dry air #HotEnoughToKill, and PhD student Medelin Kant did an awesome job presenting her work on pine survival in the Anthropocene!!

When it comes to measuring plant thermal limits, are we in hot water?? Excited to wrap this project up with Emily Perry, Medelin Kant, and Marylou Mantova before #AGU24 next month. #WhatKillsTrees #HowHotIsTooHot
