A few seals lazing on the rocks on the seaward side of St Mary's lighthouse, being looked over by a lone seagull. A relatively calm sea beyond the rocks
St Mary's Lighthouse as viewed from Whitley Bay. The causeway can be seen to the left and the rocks where the seals were to the right of the white lighthouse. The sea is quite calm, some small waves breaking on the shore. The sky above is light blue with some clouds.
A few pics from early last week in aand around Whitley Bay in North Tyneside.
Less than a minute earlier the Spanish City was bathed in a bright sunbeam which I typically missed!

Poster: Beach Spectres, we want to make the largest aperiodic tiling ever! What's an aperiodic tiling? It's when you cover a flat surface with copies of a shape like the one above, without any repeating patterns. The Spectre monotile was only discovered in 2023, and mathematicians are really excited about it! What are you doing? We're going to use large “cookie cutter” tools in the shape of the Spectre to cover the beach with the aperiodic tiling. You can help: come to the beach and we'll show you what to do. Where and when? #WhitleyBay Whitley Bay Freemasons Hall (1955), on Norham Road photographed on this day 27th July 2016.
The original Masons Hall on this site was erected on this day 13th March 1913 but was completely destroyed by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War, evening of 8th/9th December 1941.
