My final stop on my visit to historical places on this trip is the Whitney Plantation in Louisiana. While I will be documenting my experience, I intend to do it with the infinite reverence and respect this profound history deserves. #WhitneyPlantation

A photograph of a black granite slab with hundreds of names of formerly enslaved people engraved on it, surrounding an etching depicting a formerly enslaved man sitting showing the scars on his back.
Before touring Whitney Plantation, remember the 356 enslaved people who built it.
The Wall of Honor is a tribute to those held in bondage; black granite slabs etched with names, ages, skills, family ties and quotes.

Picture of one of the 216 slabs of granite bearing the engraved names of the 107,000 slaves traced to Louisiana by historian Midlo-Hall. Among the names is “Amerique” (translated: America). The reflection of others of the 18 walls can be seen reflected in the granite along with a blue and partly cloudy sky
Took the kids to #WhitneyPlantation today. There are many moving things to see but I am featuring the Hall Memorial of 18 granite walls of over 107,000 names of #slaves from the Louisiana Slave Database. Among the names seen here:

After visiting the #MLK Martin Luther King Historic Park, the #WhitneyPlantation and The #LegacyMuseum, #StoneMountain not only didn't fit in, but I found it disturbing.

Our history often erodes at time so it is important for historic sites like The #LegacyMuseum in #Montgomery, Alabama and The #WhitneyPlantation in southern Louisiana continue to show the lives of early slaves just as they were, no matter how ugly. #slavery

The African American Civil War Memorial Museum honored Samuel Fulford, a USCT soldier, during their visit to Whitney. Thanks to research supported in part by John & Donna Cummings, his story connects enslavement to the fight for freedom.
