I worry that when all the post-death work -sorting, notifications, paperwork, having a memorial service here around the end of March or early April- is done, that's when Hilde's absence will really hit hard. Building a new life without her will be... terrifying.

Day 4 without Hilde. Yard & garden this morning, then 2:00 writers group meeting at library.
Caregiving for Hilde the last year meant no time to write much or critique other members' work, or much social life at all. Missed the monthly workshops. We'll see how I cope.

Text of a quote from Sara Rian that says, "Your grief is supposed to exist loudly. All of this is supposed to take up space. Their existence, their story, their memory, your love, your ache, your survival... don't try to shove it into a dresser drawer or hide it in a shoe box on the closet shelf. How could we ask it to be that small? Make room for it, as uncomfortable as it is. If anyone asks you to pack it down or put it away, let them know that they can walk around it or they can walk away. No more trying to shrink it. No more pretending you could."

My birthday today. I’m now the same age he was when he died. I was always younger than him. Now I’m not. Nothing makes sense. #grief #widowhood
Julian died at the end of 2023. When 31 Dec came, everyone was celebrating the new year. But, I did not want that year to end because it was the last year he lived in.
Now each new year is one year further from his life and I hate it.

Antique hallway bench with coat hooks and a mirror
Dremmel kit with flexible shaft for detail and fine work. Had been in the barn for five years covered in sawdust and dirt. Now clean, organized and ready to be put to work.
Off to a good new year!
Just before the holidays the hinge broke on a hall bench.
As dinner cooked I enlisted my friend’s help to repair the hinge. We rejuvenated the bench finish and tightened the coat hooks. Then we cleaned up my late husband’s Dremmel and he taught me how to use it. #widowhood
I wish everyone a Gentle New Year, as I know that for many it won’t be happy (or will struggle to be).
Therefore, I hope the new year is as gentle as it can be for all of you, and that it brings you some level of happiness and comfort even amongst the grief.
