To the left, a part of the white wooden building that once was the Sherlock Holmes Hotel, to the right another, smaller white building. In between them a gravel road that leads down to the fjord in Hellesylt, which is close to Geiranger, a touristic nightmare. If Geiranger is too full, the gigantic floating farms for the elderly (ie luxury cruise ships) come to Helllesylt. They rush ashore to take pictures and we ran for our lives 😅. The picture shows one of Tui’s cruisers wedged between the two old buildings. Mountains in the background and a cloudy sky.

The old meets the new in Hellesylt, Norway. A thousand windows of what I call a floating geriatric hotel peaking through behind the legendary Sherlock Holmes Hotel, now closed and abandoned. A juxtaposition of old money and new.

This building has been used as a summer cafe and bookstore since 1912. It’s originally built to function as a astronomical tower for the Maritime School of Oulu in 1875. Designed by Volmar Westling, it’s built on top of what is now a historically protected structure that was once used as a storage facility for gun powder. It functioned as such from 1828 onwards, but even before that, it was part of a very old fortification, the castle of Oulu which had roots all the way back to 1605 when Finland and Sweden still was one country. The castle/fort was built by King Charles IX. The castle burned a few times due to actions of war from the Russians. First in 1715 and then in 1793.
There has been disputes over whether there are even older remains here on this site. That would be remnants from Novgorod times in the 12th century but it’s disputed.
Today you can enter the gun powder storage and get a sense of the past. It’s cool in there on hot summer days. The cafe is worth a visit too!

Description: a pink painted wooden lighthouse looking structure built on top of a very old stone cellar.

Tähtitornin kahvila, or Café Stargazer in Oulu/Uleåborg, Finland. More info and nerdy historical facts in alt text 🙃.

A lighthouse photographed from the ground upwards. It’s not the usual circular tower structure, but square with a round tower attached to the right side of the building. There’s five windows one on top of the other, so five stories tall. It’s base is black and the rest is white painted brick. There’s a balcony halfway up on the left side and a balcony at the top, the roof is flat. Green grass visible and a blue sky with thin veiled clouds. A beautiful summer day.
