I decided to cycle up to #Grefsenkollen, to get a view out #OverOslo

Not the clearest day but still one of my favourite view points of Oslo, all year around.

Cycling on regular/unstudded tyres

Riding on ice with normal tyres is entirely possible in much the same way that walking on ice is, so long as you are careful. The key is to avoid sudden movements, such as changes in direction and speed. With that in mind, here is a quick summary of some tips.

Cycle slower: This gives you more time to observe problems and means less harsh braking.
Keep it consistent: Try and keep your speed as consistent as possible. When you do need to stop, slow down very gently.
Watch the road: Keep your eyes looking ahead for issues, to give yourself the maximum time to avoid them.
Avoid turning: Keep straight when possible or take slow, wide turns if you have to.
Drop tyre pressure: This will make cycling more effort but vastly increases grip due to the increased contact surface area.
Pick your position: Avoid the very edge of roads (i.e. the gutter). Water (and hence ice) collects here and the surface is generally bumpier. Sometimes cycling in car tyre tracks is better (more worn). On the flip side, cars can polish ice and hence the middle of the lane might actually be preferable. You'll need to judge that for yourself ๐Ÿค” but with some experience it gets a lot easier.

โ„น The above is also handy if you find yourself caught off guard, with weather you did not expect. ๐Ÿ‘

It is cold in northern parts of the world. Studded tyres are awesome. If you do not have them, forgot to mount them or cannot afford to invest for your usage, I am here for you.

The number of times I have been caught out and unicycled on snow and ice is [โ€ฆ]

It started snowing again but honestly the cycle paths I was on where pretty good. I think there should be more cyclists out. If I can do it on a #unicycle
more could do it on a bicycle

I am glad I have the four inch wide tyre. Hard to see here but at points there is bumpy ice under this snow and the tyre just absorbs the difference. You hardly feel it.

I didn't know my picture was being taken, while I took a picture of my own.

Looking down at the road. Some snow present. The bottom half of a kids bike is viewable at the top of the picture and in the lower half the wheel of a unicycle.

First ride in the snow with the youngest. They'd never tried studded tyres before.

I wish it was more snow but it's a beautiful day, so I'll take it.

I absolutely love commuting to work. It is one of the highlights of my day. โ„๏ธ๐Ÿ”๏ธ๐ŸŒ…

You might too, if your trip is as nice as mine.
