Patricia Bath (1942-2019) was an African American ophthalmologist, inventor, humanitarian, and academic. She invented the laser and technique that is now used during eye surgery to precisely target and correct cataracts. She was first African American to serve a residency in ophthalmology at NYU, the first African American woman to serve on staff as a surgeon at UCLA and the first African American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical purpose. In addition, she is the holder of four other medical patents, and she founded the non-profit American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness.
