Usually, when you find wildlife tracks, the wildlife is long gone and far from sight. Sometimes, during our Wood Turtle surveys, we get lucky and tracks lead right to a turtle.

We see leeches on turtles all the time, but this is the first time we’ve seen baby leeches coming out of a turtle’s nostrils!

During a recent habitat restoration workshop, Kiley found a #WoodTurtle shell on a mowed path with clear signs of the injury that killed it. This sort of injury, where the top of the shell is sheared off, is typically caused by mowing or haying equipment.

Sunkhaze is! Sunkhaze and his trainer, Sequoia Dixon, helped us track down a #WoodTurtle whose radio transmitter had died before we could remove it, along with a GPS logger. After many months of searching, Sunkhaze had the turtle in 20 minutes!

This one-eyed #WoodTurtle is on the move! So far in 2025, he’s traveled ~3.5 miles—almost a straight line, mostly on land. That’s the farthest in 3 years Kiley has been tracking his journey. Here he is mid-snack with a mouthful of slug goo, as a mosquito dives in for a landing.
When a young boy found an injured #WoodTurtle on the side of the road, his family's quick thinking saved its life. Nearly a year later, he was there again—this time to return the turtle home.
If you thought mosquito season was bad, try being a #WoodTurtle during no-see-um/biting midge season! After spotting this turtle the other day, Kiley snapped some pics and moved along quickly after noticing biting midges accumulating more while the turtle remained still waiting for Kiley to leave.
