Penultimate test car of the event for me is the Subaru Impreza RSI, painted bright blue and powered by a 2.5-litre ‘boxer’ engine driving through all four wheels. Sadly nowhere near as exciting as that recipe sounds…

Last day at the 2024 Pasadena #WorldCarAwards test day for me dawned early with the new MINI Cooper S, the petrol one. Much the same underneath as before but cool new cabin. Thoughts on the rear lights?
Last drive of the day was in the bonkers Mercedes G 580 EQ – that’s the electric G-Wagen to you and me. 587hp, four electric motors, over 450km range, serious off-roader. And of course it can do a tank turn, which I may or may not have tried for myself…

Also tried the Hyundai Inster EV. This is an excellent car. Can’t understand how it can be made so cheaply as it doesn’t feel bargain-basement. Even drives well in the Californian mountains and on the ‘freeway’. (Full review on CompleteCar.ie: www.completecar.ie/car-reviews/...

Not sure why, but this significantly updated Toyota Camry I also drove yesterday isn’t due to come to Ireland. Looks better, more modern dashboard, a little more performance from 2.5 hybrid system. This is the sporty US-market XSE version. Cracking car.

One of the stars of today was the epic Bentley Continental GT Speed, 782hp and 1000Nm of plug-in hybrid goodness. It’s heavy but my god does it manage it well, like an old Mitsubishi Evo turned up to 11 and trimmed in gorgeous leather. Exhaust sounds grrr. Love it

Day 2 of driving started with the Lexus GX, a US car that mixes the Toyota Land Cruiser’s serious off-road hardware with a twin-turbo petrol V6, a more luxurious interior and a more refined on-road experience. Hilarious fun on these chunky tyres. Sounds good though.

Last test car on day one was Mercedes-AMG CLE 53. Perfect for the mountains here - fast, secure, rock solid on the road. The chassis is exceptional though I wish the powertrain was edgier. Full review by Matt Robinson already at www.completecar.ie/car-reviews/...

Third test car of the day is the retro-styled, but all-new Toyota Land Cruiser. This is the hybrid model. Not sure if that's coming to Europe, but interesting first taste of the big new 4x4. Better on road than before, but still a rugged workhorse.

First drive at this year’s World Car Awards test day is in Geely Starray SUV (driven here from Mexico by another juror). Spacious and good-quality interior, comfortable chassis, decent performance, but rough 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. Similar size to Audi Q5.
