Do you know the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest? 5 differences between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest: A heart attack is not the same as a cardiac arrest. A heart attack is when one of the coronary arteries becomes blocked. The heart muscle is robbed of its vital blood supply and, if left untreated, will begin to die because it is not getting enough oxygen. A cardiac arrest is when a person’s heart stops pumping blood around their body and they stop breathing normally. Many cardiac arrests in adults happen because of a heart attack. This is because a person who is having a heart attack may develop a dangerous heart rhythm, which can cause a cardiac arrest. A heart attack and a cardiac arrest are both emergency situations. Call 999 straight away.
Heart Attack Symptoms Consciousness: The person is usually awake and conscious. Breathing: Breathing is typically normal or may be difficult but present. Physical Symptoms: Chest pain, pressure, or discomfort Pain or discomfort in other areas of the upper body, such as one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach Shortness of breath Sweating Nausea, lightheadedness, or fainting Women may also experience fatigue, back pain, or nausea without chest pain.
Cardiac Arrest Symptoms Consciousness: The person suddenly collapses and loses consciousness. Breathing: They stop breathing altogether or their breathing is ineffective and gasping. Pulse: There is no detectable pulse. Responsiveness: The person does not respond to shouts or touch.

Yesterday was #WorldHeartDay, a reminder of the importance of looking after our heart health. Cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death, but so many of the risks can be reduced by making small changes such as staying active, eating well, managing stress and avoiding tobacco.
29th September was World Heart Day - a global campaign targeted at improving heart health and access to life-saving care. According to the World Heart Federation, up to 80% of premature Cardiovascular related deaths are preventable through affordable access to care, early screening, and more opportunities to make healthy choices in nutrition and stay active.
