In c.70-10 BC, this emblema in tiny opus vermiculatum tiles was in centre of a floor of a house somewhere in Naples. 🏺

A Roman mosaic photographed upside down (which is the only direction from which it is viewed in the terrace houses), so the perspective is a bit odd. A lion is shown in profile. He stands facing left with his tail arching over his back and his right forepaw on the severed head of a bull. His head is turned slightly towards us and he seems to be fixing us with his terrifying gaze. His teeth are visible and sharp! On a gentler note, his mane is delicately arranged in a two-tone colour scheme, including grey tesserae around the face and shades of brown below. The mosaic is square and has a series of simple frames and a geometric panel at the bottom.
With apologies to the lions for lateness, #WorldLionDay yesterday is a good excuse to share this lion again for #MosaicMonday. He's in one of the wonderful terrace houses at Ephesus.

For #MosaicMonday given yesterday was World Lion Day, how about the Paphos mosaic of Herakles and the Nemean lion of the 3rd century CE from the House of Orpheus. They both look serious!
So famous it became a postage stamp in 1989!
