The wumjump herds were migrating. They careened across the landscape towards their traditional mating grounds with their distinctive asymmetrical gait - kind of a hop, a twist, and a skid. It looked ungainly in the extreme but no one could deny they made excellent speed. They were early this year, which usually indicated that a hard winter followed by a gentle and extended spring was coming. The usual scavengers lined the route, waiting for the last wumjump to clear so they could go in and feast off the small (and not so small) animals that didn't move quickly enough.
