Two preliminary recounts were requested by council candidates. Only one was approved. Mayor recount request is still to come. #yyc #calgary #yycvote

5/10 The vote was tight, and #Sharp has asked for a recount (as is her right).
But assuming #Farkas holds his win, Climenhaga notes the irony:
"...I suppose the #MAGA crowd will spend the next four years fervently bad-mouthing him too."
#yycvote
4/10 In #Calgary, the #UCP's #MAGA-adjacent operators and trolls succeeded in blocking Mayor #Gondek's re-election.
But their own favoured candidate, Sonya #Sharp of the #CommunitiesFirst party, failed.
#Calgarians instead elected #JeromyFarkas, an independent #conservative.
#yycvote
9/10 The bureaucratic failure went even deeper.
Voters reported being given ballots for the wrong ward.
Others were falsely told the Catholic school trustee race was acclaimed and were denied their ballot, like Brian Popp in Ward 7, who had to fight to vote.

🇨🇦 EXPERTS BLAME UCP RULES FOR 'UNCONSCIONABLE' ELECTION DAY CHAOS 🇨🇦
Amir Said for CBC News reports voters faced three-hour waits as new rules created massive backlogs.
Some, like Chance Devlin, gave up. He now regrets it as Calgary's mayor won by fewer than 600 votes.

The Calgary city council vote count is now complete. Here is the composition of the council by party:
Independent - 8
Communities First - 4
The Calgary Party - 1
A Better Calgary Party - 1

Mayor-elect Farkas has first scrum with media, however the Sharp campaign has requested a recount. #yyc #yycvote #calgary

When was the last time Calgary City Council had such a low percentage of non-white members (just 1 of 15, if the current vote leads hold), and such a low percentage of women members (just 2 of 15)?

It's unofficially official. @jeromyyyc.bsky.social will be the next Mayor of Calgary.
A vote difference of 585 between himself and Sonya Sharp.
There will almost certainly be a recount just to make sure.

Why does voter turn-out matter?
Because in all likelihood, when everything is said and done, Calgary’s next mayor will have received the vote of roughly 1 out of every ten eligible voters.
Think about that for a minute.
#yyccc #yycvote
It is now midnight in Alberta.
Calgary has reported 77% of the polls for mayor.
Edmonton has reported 7% of the polls for mayor.

If you stopped counting right this second and named winners in #yycvote, you’d have 8 independent councillors, 3 Communities First, and 3 Calgary Party. And an independent mayor.
So we did political parties because…?
I know nothing, but I am curious if Gondek gets a higher proportion of today’s votes vs advance votes based on all the undecideds?

I have sympathy carpal tunnel pains for the #yycvote counters (and employees who had to hand write all those declaration forms)

Curious why I haven’t seen coverage from Sharp HQ yet (via Global). Perhaps not inviting guests to the venue yet.

At this time, the results on our live Calgary election page are being affected by the AWS server issues. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working on the issue. We hope to have it resolved shortly. Thank you for your patience. #yyc #yycvote #calgary
It’s 9:15. Time to reheat your emotional support pizza.

Don’t worry, this isn’t a #yycvote political tweet…
For the past year, I've been doing an embedded "ethnographic" study of Calgary's election. As a consequence, I've mostly kept quiet about it. It'll still be months before I have qualitative results to share, but in the meantime, here are some results from our pre-election survey. #yyccc #yycvote
I asked about the form, because i don't ever recall filling one in, was told it was for school board trustee only. If you were on the master list, you didn't need it for councillor or mayor. #yycvote

Get ready - UCP is about to pass a law saying who's allowed to run in elections next time. Only the "serious" need apply. Is this partisan? No answer to that. Column.

A social media post by David Staples, columnist with the Edmonton Journal Post Media Newspaper, posted on October 27, 2024 which reads: The huge win for everyone on all sides, left, right and centre, is an election where everyone believes the results are credible. We used to do this effortlessly. Vote on Election Day with proper ID. Vote with paper ballots. Votes counted by citizens with scrutineers.
A social media post by David Staples, columnist with the Edmonton Journal Post Media Newspaper, posted on October 20, 2025 which reads: Unbelievably stupid process to vote in Edmonton. Do they have no voter list anymore? Where they quickly check your name, ID and give you a ballot? Long line up to fill out paper with name/address, line up again so someone can check paperwork. Idiotic slow, stupid process.
A snippet from a news article stating "The process for voting is different this year, which can impact the time it takes to vote. All electors are legislatively required to complete a Statement of Eligibility Form (Form 13) at the voting station. This form is a declaration by an elector that they meet the required legislated criteria to receive and cast ballots. Also, some electors will need to be added to the permanent electors register before receiving their ballots. This can take time. We ask Edmontonians to plan ahead and please have patience.
🤫
Nobody tell David Staples this is all because of the changes me and my UCP have made to how municipal elections are held in Alberta.
Let's see if he can use his "journalism" skills to figure it out on his own!🤭
