voodoocactus's review of The Fox Wife 5/5: What a fascinating book! It mixes a detective story with old Chinese folklore and myths, all happening during the death throes of the declining Qing dynasty and the looming revolution. History and traditions collide with the more modern (and often Western-flavored) ideals Odd chapters are in Snow’s 1st person POV, and even chapters tell the story from Detective Bao’s 3rd person POV. It works wonders in hooking the reader as you want to know what happens to Snow but the next chapter is Bao’s but then you want to know what happened to Bao and when the chapter ends, you remember that oh, yeah...

this was lovely 💜

Do you have a show you just don't get tired of rewatching? Besides my obsession with Austen's dramas and Love Between Fairy and Devil, for me, it's The Ghost Bride. Both the series and the book (by Yangsze Choo) are fantastic! 😍

A passage from the novel The Fox by Yangsze Choo which goes:

I raised my eyebrows. Now that I was here in this interesting house behind the medicine store, I could almost sniff out an aroma of mystery that curled through the winding passageways. Or perhaps it was just stewed pork belly.

Maybe the aroma of mystery IS stewed pork belly. 🤷‍♀️

I recommend #ghostbride by #yangszechoo It’s a very interesting book that feels like Tim Burton. Talks a lot about the Chinese customs of death.
