Hexagonal weathering in Navajo Sandstone. Caused as the rock is exhumed by erosion. Since it lithified a depth under higher pressure the lower depth/exposure causes the rock to expand slightly. When basalt cools the resulting contraction can create hexagonal weathering. Navajo Sandstone can also show hexagonal weathering; but, it is caused by expansion of the rock as it decompresses when exposed.

I’m looking through my photos from the past week and came across this one. This place was wild! I never made it to The Wave, didn’t win the lottery, but I’m glad I found the Yant Flats Trail on AllTrails. I was pretty much the only one there… I passed a couple other people along the trail, but had this whole landscape to myself.
