The reach of the Drenthen now covers half the kingdom. One whole territory lays decimated and the others will suffer for generations to come. Carfrae, Lady Rachael’s castle stronghold on the mountain, is on the brink of collapsing. Still, with all the information Marc knows, the Drenthen onslaught continues. Sorcerer Cinnaminson orders Commander Laensey and a select group of fighters northward. They are to elude the enemy as best they can in the heart of winter. Also, they must find a young girl named Ashe. With her help and their guidance, they must locate and destroy the means of Drenthen entering the kingdom. Marc, knowing his destiny, realizes his time in the kingdom draws to an end.
Marc finally learns the true nature behind Nathel’s betrayal. The kingdom is in turmoil, being brought to the breaking point by a ruthless enemy. With his family lost and his friends scattered beyond reach, Marc must search deep inside himself and find the strength to save those he loves and the kingdom from the onslaught of the Drenthen horde.
After a journey to the northern shore to learn more about the fallen warrior Kalendeck, Marc returns to the castle of Croskreye. He has valued information for Sorcerer Tyndall. Those in power vie for the king’s favor to gain control of the Wiladene territory. Many believe the kingdom will tear itself apart trying to find someone to govern the empty land. Few know Marc holds the key to preventing the chaos that gripped the kingdom a generation past.
Thrust into a medieval world with no possessions of his own or memories of his past, he is forced to live as best he can with those who found him. Given the name Marc, he accepts he cannot leave and struggles to fit in by learning all he can about this magical land of kings, sorcerers, and warriors. It changes one night when, in a dream, he hears a name whispered. Upon awakening, Marc relates the dream to a sorcerer he has befriended. He is then told of a warrior whose death brought an end to the enemy that almost destroyed the Kingdom. Marc finds himself increasingly drawn to the stories of this warrior. He seeks out the site that the ghost of this fallen hero still haunts. So begins his journey across the kingdom, where he discovers that fate entwined his identity with both the past and future of this land he now calls home.
