In 1989, producers Tim Matheson and Daniel Grodnik and director Philip Noyce made BLIND FURY, a modernized and Americanized remake of ZATOICHI CHALLENGED starring Rutger Hauer. It was hoped to be the 1st of a series but it wasn't a big hit and no other was ever made.

Misumi directed the original Zatoichi film, THE TALE OF ZATOICHI, in 1962, and this was his 4th of 6 entries in the series. He also directed star Shintaro Katsu in HANZO THE RAZOR: SWORD OF JUSTICE and Katsu's brother Tomisaburo Wakayama in the Lone Wolf & Cub movies.
