Rangers Week Ahead: Schedule & Storylines – Miller, Panarin, Zibanejad and More Here are the biggest storylines for the New York Rangers and their schedule for the week of Dec. 21–28, 2025. ## Captain J.T. Miller Injured The most pressing news is the injury to captain J.T. Miller. He sustained an upper-body injury after a heavy hit from Philadelphia’s Nick Seeler during Saturday’s game (Dec. 20). Miller did not return to that game and did not travel with the team to Nashville for Sunday’s matchup. He is currently being evaluated by team doctors in New York. ## Panarin’s Electrifying Return Artemi Panarin returned to the lineup on Saturday after missing time due to illness. He immediately made an impact, scoring two goals in regulation and the game-winning goal in the shootout to complete a 5-4 comeback victory over the Flyers. ## Zibanejad’s “Culture” Reset Mika Zibanejad was recently benched by head coach Mike Sullivan for missing a team meeting due to traffic. This sparked significant discussion regarding team culture. Zibanejad responded on the ice Saturday with a crucial game-tying power-play goal late in the third period. ## Rookie Call-Ups & Youth Movement In a bid to spark offense, the Rangers recently recalled top prospects Gabe Perreault and Brennan Othmann from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL). Perreault scored his first career NHL goal earlier this week against the St. Louis Blues and added an assist against Philadelphia. ## Adam Fox Still Out Star defenseman Adam Fox remains on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) with an upper-body injury. While he has been spotted skating in a red non-contact jersey—a sign of progress—he remains out of the lineup for the immediate future. ## Rangers Schedule Dec. 21 – 27 **Date**| **Opponent**| **Time (EST)**| **Venue**| **Broadcast/Notes** ---|---|---|---|--- **Sun, Dec 21**| @ Nashville Predators| 7:00 PM| Bridgestone Arena| J.T. Rangers Will Struggle to Score Goals With Their Current Lineup The New York Rangers opened up the season at home with a disappointing 3-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 7. While it is just one game, there should be concerns about the team’s failure to generate scoring opportunities, and unless head coach Mike Sullivan makes changes to the lineup, they will likely continue to struggle offensively. ## The Rangers’ Defensemen While the Rangers have an elite playmaker in Adam Fox, they do not have any other offensive defensemen. A few times in the season-opening loss to the Penguins, they had opportunities to take shots through traffic from the point, but either missed the net, opted to pass the puck, or dumped it behind the net. Besides Fox, the Rangers’ most proven defenseman is Vladislav Gavrikov, whom they signed to a seven-year, $49 million contract this offseason. He is known for his strong defensive play, but he also had one of his best offensive seasons in 2024-25, as he finished with five goals and 25 assists in 82 games with the Los Angeles Kings. While he should be a difference-maker defensively, he should not be relied on offensively. The Rangers’ second and third defense pairs are comprised of defensive defensemen. Despite struggling late last season, Carson Soucy is on the second defense pair, playing alongside Will Borgen. Soucy finished with four goals and nine assists in 75 games last season, while Borgen finished with five goals and 10 assists in 84 games. Additionally, the Rangers played Braden Schneider and Urho Vaakanainen together on their third pair. They both finished with career-highs in points and assists in 2024-25 as Schneider finished with six goals and 15 assists in 80 games, while Vaakanainen had two goals and 14 assists in 51 games. Neither member of the pair is known for their offense, but Schneider started the season on the second power-play unit. The hope is that he will continue to develop and improve offensively, but he is known more for his physicality than his skill. Urho Vaakanainen, New York Rangers (Photo by Jared Silber/NHLI via Getty Images) Besides Fox, there is not a lot of offensive skill on the Rangers’ blue line. However, they do have a skilled prospect in Scott Morrow, who could get called up from the American Hockey League (AHL) and contribute at some point this season. He had one goal and five assists in 14 games with the Carolina Hurricanes last season and also had 13 goals and 26 assists in 52 games with the Chicago Wolves in the AHL. ## The Rangers’ Forwards Sullivan opted to move Mika Zibanejad to right wing after he struggled at center last season, and is playing him on a line with J.T. Miller and Will Cuylle. The line needs to produce offensively and has the talent to do so. Both Cuylle and Miller are physical and strong on the forecheck, and all three are good skaters. In the game against the Penguins, they did create some of the team’s top scoring chances, but Zibanejad was unable to capitalize on them. **Related:J.T. Miller’s Wild Ride to Becoming Captain of the New York Rangers** The Rangers should have another strong line in Artemi Panarin, Vincent Trocheck, and Alexis Lafreniere, and they have developed chemistry after spending most of 2023-24 and last season playing together. They had more success in 2023-24 as Lafreniere had a down season in 2024-25, and the team struggled to find another line that could produce consistently at even strength. New York’s top two lines both have the potential to be very productive offensively, although they will need to prove that they can consistently be relied on. However, the third line is much more questionable. Rookie Noah Laba played very well in his debut as he was effective on the forecheck and skated well. He produced in the preseason, and the hope is that he will continue to contribute in the regular season. The Rangers also opted to play veterans Conor Sheary and Taylor Raddysh on the third line. Sheary had success with Sullivan and won the Cup in 2015-16 and 2016-17, but he has struggled to produce in the NHL over his last few seasons. He had four goals and 11 assists in 57 games in 2023-24 and was held without a point in five games last season with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Raddysh also struggled to produce offensively over the last two seasons, as he had five goals and nine assists in 73 games with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2023-24 and seven goals and 20 assists in 80 games with the Washington Capitals last season. On the fourth line, the Rangers played Sam Carrick, Matt Rempe, and Adam Edstrom, who played well together last season. All three are physical, effective on the forecheck, and gritty. They were effective in 2024-25 and the season opener, but should not be relied on offensively, as last season Carrick had six goals and 14 assists in 80 games, Edstrom had five goals and four assists in 51 games, and Rempe had three goals and five assists in 42 games. If Sullivan does look to make changes, the Rangers’ top prospects Gabriel Perreault, Brennan Othmann, or Brett Berard could get a shot in the lineup. Veteran Jonny Brodzinski could also slot into the lineup as the speedy skater played well last season and finished with 12 goals and seven assists in 51 games. ## The Rangers Need to Bounce Back From Their Loss in Opener After a disappointing 2024-25 season, getting shut out by the Penguins at home was a very frustrating way to start this season. The Rangers have made changes to improve defensively, but like last season, they opted to play veterans with less upside over their top prospects. While that may help them defensively, they do not have a lot of offensive upside on their third and fourth lines or on defense besides Fox, which will put a lot of pressure on their stars to carry the team offensively.

Mika Zibanejad’s Resurgence Coming at the Perfect Time for the Rangers When the New York Rangers acquired J.T. Miller from the Vancouver Canucks on Jan. 31, it was a move not only to help the team this season, but for years to come. So far, he has been everything the team could hope for and more with 14 points in 11 games since the deal. However, it is not only the impact he has had on the team but also the players surrounding him, in particular, on Mika Zibanejad. Before the trade, Zibanejad was playing some of — if not the worst — hockey of his entire career with no signs of improvement. Having been playing on a line with Miller, he has seen a major turnaround in his game, and it could not have come at a better time for the Rangers. ## Zibanejad of the Top Players in the League Since Feb. 1 Since Miller’s first game back with the team on Feb. 1, he has been centering a line with Zibanejad on the wing and those two have become a fantastic duo. Zibanejad has four goals and 11 assists for 15 points in 11 games played, which up until yesterday was the most points by a player in the entire league since the trade. He looks like a more confident player and it seems as if Miller’s play style is starting to rub off on Zibanejad as he is forechecking more and being more physical. He is up to 13 goals and 44 points in 61 games played this season and while you want to see those numbers continue to rise, this has been Zibanejad’s best stretch of the season and it needs to continue. J.T. Miller, New York Rangers (Photo by Brian Fluharty/Getty Images) While there were so many stories about the relationship between Miller and Canucks’ Swedish star Elias Pettersson, how they did not get along, and how that was a major reason why they traded Miller, he seems to have found a new —and so far better —relationship with the Rangers’ Swedish star in Zibanejad. Maybe it’s because they played together for a few seasons back when Miller was on the team from 2016-2018, but it seems they have found a great connection at a critical time of the season with the Rangers fighting for their playoff lives. ## Rangers Are Fighting For Playoff Positioning As of this writing, the Rangers currently hold the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with 66 points, tied with the Detroit Red Wings, but they have the edge over them due to having more regulation wins than the Red Wings. And don’t look now, but they are also only six points behind the struggling New Jersey Devils for third place in the Metropolitan Division with two games in hand. The Rangers are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games while the Devils are 4-6-0 and have lost Jack Hughes to an injury for an undisclosed amount of time. If these two teams continue on their respective trends, they could find themselves switching spots in the standings and that is why it is so important for a player like Zibanejad to continue playing at the high level he has been recently. **Related:New York Rangers’ Untouchables for the 2025 Trade Deadline** With so many teams in the thick of the wild-card race and with the teams in front of them struggling at the moment, now is the time for the Rangers to strike and try to make a push to get a divisional playoff spot, or at least stay in a wild card spot for the rest of the season. Their top players, led by Zibanejad and Miller, are starting to play better and if this team can pull together some big wins against some tough upcoming opponents, it go a long way to securing a playoff spot after a rollercoaster season. ## Do The Rangers Keep Zibanejad at Wing Beyond This Season? One of the biggest questions when the Rangers acquired Miller was how would it impact Zibanejad and his play. Well, so far so good; this move to the wing has been a career saver for him. Now, the question is will general manager Chris Drury look to still trade Zibanejad in the offseason or will they decide to keep him on the wing going into next season and look for a third-line center to play behind Miller and Vincent Trocheck? If Zibanejad continues his great play, he can still be a key player as they try to win a Stanley Cup. However, he will be 32 by the time this season is over and will still be under contract until the 2029-30 season at an $8.5 million annual cap hit. It still might be more beneficial to move on from him as Drury might be able to get more for him now that he is playing better. Still, it would be up to Zibanejad if he even would move at all since he has a full no-move clause in his contract until the final year of the deal. One potential move that could impact his decision is what they decide to do with Chris Kreider. He could be gone as soon as the March 7 trade deadline and if he isn’t, he is likely to be moved this offseason. If the Rangers do decide to move on from Zibanejad’s best friend, could that be enough to convince him to move as well? Only time will tell, but it will be interesting to see what they decide to do with him beyond this season. For now, Zibanejad is going to be a key player heading down the stretch and into the playoffs if they make it. He has heated up at the right time and his partnership with Miller has revitalized him and has him playing on a competitive level he didn’t have earlier this season. Now is the perfect time for him to be heating up as the Rangers are going to need all the help they can get as they try to push for a playoff spot in the tight Eastern Conference race.

Rangers Should Begin a Retool in the 2025 Offseason
After winning the Presidents’ Trophy less than a calendar year ago, the New York Rangers find themselves on the outside looking in for a playoff spot. Considering their underwhelming performance this season with an aging forward core, they should begin a retool. Specifically, it should be around defenseman Adam Fox and goaltender Igor Shesterkin. But why? Isn’t that a bit overdramatic?

Rangers Seeing That Father Time Is Undefeated

New York has a top-heavy roster. Stars are evident, then there’s a bit of a drop-off afterward. But what happens when a majority of those stars are in their 30s, and Father Time makes his inevitable appearance? Well, you get the 2024-25 Rangers. They are led by five veteran forwards, and each of them is playing substantially worse than last season. Aside from Alexis Lafreniere, Will Cuylle, and Gabe Perreault at some point, there’s a lack of youth present, too.

Related: New York Rangers’ Top 10 Prospects for 2024-25

Artemi Panarin scored 49 goals and 71 assists last season, which is remarkable even without context. But he did that at the age of 32—only five players have scored 120 points in a single season at that age or older: Wayne Gretzky (32; 130 points), Phil Esposito (32; 127 points), Marcel Dionne (33; 126 points), and Jaromir Jagr (33; 123 points). He’s on an 82-game pace of 88 points this season, which is still an all-time great showing for someone just shy of their mid-30s, but it’s not enough for New York. Expectations are unfairly high.

Mike Zibanejad, Vincent Trocheck, Chris Kreider, and Artemi Panarin celebrate after Trocheck’s first-period goal during Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs between the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals (Photo by Randy Litzinger/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Panarin’s decline is by no means a bad thing, even if we disregard the age factor. He’s 12 points ahead of any other Ranger in scoring, so his contributions are quite elite. The same can’t be said for the other veterans on the team, though. J.T. Miller, Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, and Vincent Trocheck are making a combined $28.625 million against the salary cap, and all have some sort of trade protection.

The problem with those four is that they’ve all seen noticeable decline points-wise, corresponding to their age. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it historically doesn’t get much better from here. Yet, Kreider is under contract through 2026-27, Trocheck through 2028-29, and Zibanejad and Miller through 2029-30. Considering each of them has already celebrated their 31st birthday, it’s a bit worrying that only Miller has an 82-game point pace of above 56.

To visualize this a bit better, below is a graphic showing their points per 60 minutes by age. The gray dots represent every forward season with 500 minutes of ice time since 2007-08, to give you an idea of historical aging trends.

<img alt="J.T. Miller, Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, and Vincent Trocheck by age (The Hockey Writers)

Compared to their previous season, every player above has seen a scoring drop. As you can see, the decline really starts to set in around the age Miller, Kreider, Zibanejad, and Trocheck will be next fall. New York can always “run it back”, but is it too late for that? Has their time already passed?

Rangers Mustn’t Triple Down

If the Rangers finish this season as one of the 13 worst teams in the NHL, the first-round pick they sent to the Vancouver Canucks for Miller (later flipped to the Pittsburgh Penguins) will defer to 2026. In a theoretical overhaul of the veteran core, the Penguins would likely be laughing to the bank. But that shouldn’t dissuade the Rangers from doing what’s right.

Related: Rangers’ Game Against the Sabres Proves Why They Should Be Deadline Sellers

There could be a world where things get better next season if the Rangers triple down, adding a few pieces in the summer. Shesterkin sees positive regression, the power play does, too, and defensive reinforcements significantly improve the team’s play-driving at 5-on-5. Sounds good, no?

The Rangers could indeed be doing a much better job of building around their core. Had they done so last offseason, they’d probably be a playoff team. But the 82-game point pace of Stanley Cup winners over the past decade is approximately 108—there’s a bar in the NHL. It’s entirely unreasonable to expect an offense almost exclusively led by players who will be 32 and over next season to flip a switch and play contending hockey again.

A few things went the Rangers’ way in 2023-24 for them to win the Presidents’ Trophy, but Panarin’s historical defiance of the aging curve was a big one. In the playoffs, Shesterkin’s brick-wall performance carried the load. Panarin saw some point regression in the postseason, but a core a year younger than they are today was only enough to win 10 of the required 16 games for a championship—that’s 62.5%. So, the question becomes, what else can realistically improve?

In the last five playoff seasons, there have been 62 goalie entries with 250+ unblocked shot attempts faced.

Among them, #NYR Igor Shesterkin ranks in the following for goals saved above expected per 60 minutes:

– 2nd (2023; R1 Loss)
– 3rd (2022; R3 Loss)
– 8th (2024; R3 Loss) pic.twitter.com/x0KeBDy8Lz
— Justin Giampietro (@justingiam) February 24, 2025

The Rangers don’t have a lot of trade pieces, nor do they have a ton of help coming up. At some point, you just have to let it go. It’s possible, but pretty unlikely, that this core wins a Stanley Cup as constructed.

Rangers Should Begin a Retool

The Rangers don’t have to continue going down this path. But pivoting from it will take some sacrifices.

Though Fox and Shesterkin are hardly young anymore, they are still franchise cornerstones. One would imagine they remain one of the best in the business at their position for many seasons to come—they should be going nowhere. Lafreniere and Cuylle should stick around, while major prospects should be a part of the future. Everyone else, more or less, is on the chopping block.

If the Rangers can trade their core forwards (Panarin, Miller, Kreider, Zibanejad, and Trocheck), then that’d be splendid. If it takes a buyout to rid of some of the longer contracts, so be it. Whatever it takes, it’s paramount that money is freed, and future assets are brought in. It can help set forth a new era of Rangers hockey, rather than dying on the “well, we’re already in this mess” hill.

When it comes to reacquiring elite talent, there shouldn’t be much panic at all. Players flock to play and live in New York—it shouldn’t be hard to convince stars to sign long-term. The Rangers already cheated their way to contention this way, in a sense, as Panarin and Fox wouldn’t be playing for this team if not for its location. So, they should be able to repeat the process.

Sometimes, you have to tone down your ego and do what’s best. General manager Chris Drury took a team that hadn’t won a playoff series in over four calendar years when he was hired and made them a juggernaut. That deserves praise. Is he willing to make the hard decision to take an intentional step back to make a great leap forward long-term, or would he rather do the “safe” thing and keep on trucking?
<div Rangers News & Rumors: 4 Nations, Vesey & Smith Trade Talks
The New York Rangers have bounced back and found themselves pushing to get back into the postseason to try and win their first Stanley Cup since 1994. They had a tough stretch earlier in the season where they seemed to be falling apart internally, but they have since turned it around and have begun fighting their way back into the playoff picture.

Related: What to Expect From the 6 Rangers at the 4 Nations Face-Off

They decided to acquire forward J.T. Miller from the Vancouver Canucks bolstering their forward depth, but it seems as though more might be coming. In this edition of Rangers News & Rumors, we look at who is representing the team at the 4 Nations Face-Off, as well as some trade talks surrounding Jimmy Vesey and Reilly Smith.

4 Nations Representatives From Rangers

The 4 Nations Face-Off tournament got underway this week with Canada taking on Sweden on Wednesday (Feb. 12) and defeating them 4-3 in overtime. This was the first matchup between Team Canada & Team Sweden since 2014 in Sochi at the Olympics, which Canada won 3-0.

Mika Zibanejad, New York Rangers (Jess Starr/The Hockey Writers)

The Rangers have six players representing their team at the tournament, with players on every team except for Canada. Urho Vaakanainen is representing Team Finland, Mika Zibanejad is representing Team Sweden, while Adam Fox, Chris Kreider, Vincent Trocheck, and J.T. Miller are all playing for Team USA. Team Finland and Team USA battle each other on Thursday (Feb. 13) with both teams opening their tournament with those games.

In his first game, Zibanejad didn’t notch a single point but his team was able to pick up one point for the overtime loss. He looked solid and created some chances with two shots on goal in just over 20 minutes of ice time. They will look to bounce back on Saturday (Feb. 15) in a battle against Team Finland.

Reilly Smith, Jimmy Vesey Trade Speculation Rising

As the Rangers look to clear out some cap space and potentially make space for forward Brennan Othmann, rumors have begun to swirl about the team potentially moving Jimmy Vesey and Reilly Smith. In a recent article from Vince Mercogliano, he suggests that the Rangers could look to move one, or both of, Vesey and Smith with the idea of giving Othmann a full-time spot in the NHL.

Smith, who is 33 years old, has scored 10 goals and added 16 assists for 26 points through 54 games this season. Throughout his career, he has scored 223 goals and added 316 assists for 539 points through 894 games which comes out to a 0.60 points-per-game average. He is in the final season of his contract which has a $5 million cap hit, and has a modified no-trade clause.

Vesey, who is 31 years old, has scored three goals and added one assist for four points through 30 games this season. Throughout his career, he has scored 99 goals and added 91 assists for 190 points through 613 games which comes out to a 0.31 points-per-game average. He is also in the final season of his contract, and he has an $800,000 cap hit.

Either player could be a valuable asset for a contending team so the Rangers may hang onto them both as their own rental players and let them walk in the offseason. Some teams could also look to buy low if they’re willing to take on entire salaries. Either way, it looks like both players are available heading toward the 2025 Trade Deadline.

As the 2024-25 season moves along, be sure to continue following The Hockey Writers as 4 Takeaways From Rangers’ 4-3 Win Over Blue Jackets
In a game with massive playoff implications, the New York Rangers took on the Columbus Blue Jackets in both teams’ last game before the 4 Nations Face-Off. The Rangers were coming off a devastating 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins the night before. The Rangers earned a massive two points against Columbus, putting them just three points back of the second wild-card spot heading into the break.

Game Recap

The Rangers began the game with the urgency of a team that recognized its back was against the wall. They struck first when Arthur Kaliyev, back in the lineup after being a healthy scratch, scored on a wraparound to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. For the first half of the opening period, it was all Rangers—they were skating hard, backchecking, and generating shots. However, as has often been the case this season, the momentum began to shift.

Following a failed zone exit, the Blue Jackets capitalized when the Rangers lost track of Kent Johnson to Jonathan Quick‘s right side. Johnson received a pass and buried it to tie the game. Less than a minute later, Braden Schneider slowed Mathieu Olivier as he entered the zone, but Alexis Lafrenière, Vincent Trocheck, and Urho Vaakanainen inexplicably failed to backcheck, allowing Columbus an easy 4-on-2 opportunity. Justin Danforth finished off the play with a tip-in goal, putting the Blue Jackets ahead. Quick made several key saves to keep the Rangers in the game, but the latter half of the period was a disaster for New York.

Related: 5 New York Rangers’ New Year’s Resolutions

The Rangers opened the second period with strong play but struggled to break through offensively. Six minutes in, Trocheck and Damon Severson were assessed matching roughing minors. The Rangers took advantage of the open ice, tying the game 30 seconds later when Mika Zibanejad fired a one-timer past the Blue Jackets’ netminder. However, with under three minutes remaining in the period, another lackluster backcheck from the Rangers led to Columbus reclaiming the lead.

Mika Zibanejad, New York Rangers (Amy Irvin / The Hockey Writers)

In the most crucial period of their season so far, the Rangers responded. Will Cuylle drew a penalty and, during the delayed penalty, took a shot that was tipped in by Vaakaneinen. The Rangers continued to control play, but with three minutes left, Columbus had a threatening shift, generating multiple scoring chances. Then, with just under two minutes remaining, Cuylle netted his second point of the period, putting the Rangers ahead 4-3. New York held firm in the final moments, securing a critical two points in the standings while preventing Columbus from earning a point in overtime.

Rangers Takeaways

Since the J.T. Miller trade, Zibanejad has recorded eight points in five games. But it’s not just about the numbers—every aspect of his game has improved. Quite frankly, he looks like a different player. If Zibanejad can maintain this new level of play, it will bode very well for the Rangers down the stretch. His struggles earlier in the season were far from pretty, but his recent performances have resembled that of a true number-one center. He’s scoring, creating chances, backchecking, and doing all the little things right—efforts that deserve recognition. Now, he just needs to keep it going.

After a crushing loss to the Penguins, this win keeps the Rangers in the playoff race and gives them something to feel good about heading into the 4 Nations Face-Off break. They now sit at 27-24-4, just three points out of a wild-card spot. This was a massive win for the team, their playoff hopes, and their confidence.

Cuylle was the hero, scoring the game-winning goal and assisting on the tying goal in the third period. After a hot start to the season—22 points in his first 27 games—he cooled off with just five points in his next 27. His two-point performance last night was huge and could be the spark he needs to get back on track.

The bottom line is simple: keep winning. The Rangers can’t afford to take their foot off the gas, but this victory makes the postseason feel much more within reach.

<figure class="aligncenter Rangers Trading for J.T. Miller Makes Sense Now & for the Future
The New York Rangers are the hottest team in the league since the calendar flipped to 2025. They are on a 10-game point streak with a record of 7-0-3 in those games. They are three points out of a wildcard spot and 10 points out of third in the Metropolitan Division with three games in hand over the New Jersey Devils. It is a miracle that the team even finds themselves in this position, as it seemed like this was a lost season not too long ago.

With the team performing better and pushing for a playoff spot, it seems that the Rangers want to add to the team ahead of the March 7 Trade Deadline. The one big name they have been connected to in recent weeks is J.T. Miller of the Vancouver Canucks. It seems he is more likely than not to be traded any day now, and the Rangers have been the main team connected to him. They even had a trade for him fall through last weekend, but they still remain the top team involved. In this piece, we are going to go over why making a trade for Miller makes sense for this team now and going forward.

It Likely Won’t Cost Much to Acquire Miller

With the Canucks seeming desperate to move Miller at all costs now, it likely won’t cost the Rangers much to acquire him. They are truly the only team interested that could take him and his full contract of $8.5 million right now and not have to send any salary back to Vancouver. There were other teams with reported varying interest in Miller like the Devils and Carolina Hurricanes, but after the big trade for Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall, Carolina doesn’t have the space for the deal and the Devils would have to trade some big salary off of their roster to make a deal work. As of right now, it seems that the Rangers are the only team left in these negotiations and they are one of the only teams he would consider waiving his no-move clause for.

It was reported that center Filip Chytil was the main piece of the deal that fell through between these two teams last week. It makes sense why he would be part of a trade like this. With Miller being a top-two center for Vancouver, they were going to need a center back in a potential deal.

Filip Chytil, New York Rangers (Jess Starr/The Hockey Writers)

For the Rangers, they weren’t going to trade Vincent Trocheck and Mika Zibanejad was not going to waive his no-move clause to go to the Canucks, so Chytil was the only option. Now, the Rangers might not have to give up Chytil in a deal because, in this scenario, they have all the power in these negotiations. The Canucks are desperate to move Miller and all the Rangers have to do is wait for Vancouver to drop their asking price and then make a deal that works for them.

Trading Mika Zibanejad in the Offseason

Now, the major concern many have in a potential Miller deal is having both him and Zibanejad on the books until the 2029-30 season at $8.5 million per season. Both of them are going to be 32 years old by the time this season is over and along with Trocheck, who is going to be 32 by the time next season begins, fans are worried about the Rangers having a very old and expensive center core for years to come. While they might be impactful for the next two or three seasons after this one, all players decline and fans don’t want these players on the team together when that time comes. However, there is one solution to this issue, and that is trading Zibanejad this offseason when more teams have the cap space to take on his deal. It also gives him time to figure out where he wants to go.

Related: Rangers’ Igor Shesterkin Stepping Up Since Returning From IR

It’s no secret that Zibanejad has seen a massive drop in his production over this season and last. He had 72 points in 81 games last season and now, it seems he won’t be getting close to those kinds of numbers with just nine goals and 29 points in 48 games played this season. So, the big question is, why would any team take on a player like this who seems to be declining and who is on a long-term deal?

Well, the salary cap is going up next season and every team is always going to prioritize the center ice position. So, it would make sense as to why certain teams would be interested in a player like Zibanejad, as they may think he could bounce back with their team. Many think his contract is untradable due his him performing so poorly, but there have been worse contracts traded.

Miller Would Be a Major Boost in a Potential Playoff Push

Making a trade for Miller maybe didn’t make sense a few weeks ago when the Rangers were looking more like a lottery team than a playoff team. Now, with the team finding their game and pushing for a playoff spot, adding a player like Miller, especially if you don’t have to give up major pieces off the current roster, would be a massive boost to this team as they head down the stretch. Even though he is having a down season with just eight goals and 33 points in 38 games played, this is a player who is coming off a 103-point season and a player who had 12 points in 13 games in the playoffs. He is one of the elite players in this league when he is on his game. Coming back to New York could give him that spark back.

J.T. Miller of the Vancouver Canucks celebrates his goal during the second period in Game One of the Second Round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Edmonton Oilers (Photo by Jeff Vinnick/NHLI via Getty Images)

Miller is also the type of player that the Rangers are lacking. He brings heart and physicality in every shift he plays and he is not afraid to get in the dirty areas to make plays happen. This is a player the Rangers need on their team if they want to make a push for the playoffs. Does he have his weaknesses? Absolutely. Just like every player in this league, he is not perfect, but he would still be a great addition to this team. It is going to be interesting to see how this all plays out because a Miller deal could happen at any time and if it does happen, look for the Rangers to be that team he gets traded to.
<div
