It means so much to Ziraun that Astarion listens to him, as no one cared about his feelings or opinions in the past. Now he feels seen and heard.

Back in Menzoberranzan, long, well-kept, partially braided, flawless hair was a status symbol for Ziraun as a noble, and a source of pride for him too.
During the adventure, Ziraun started to prefer a simple ponytail, as it was easier in camping conditions.
