Pamela J. Johnson founded the Afro-American Music Institute Boys’ Choir in 1990. Under the direction of Dr. James T. Johnson Jr, the ensemble has grown into a choir renown for its musical styles and its interpretations of African-American Music such as black art music, blues, gospel, pop, spiritual, and jazz. Today, the choir is an important part of the Afro-American Music Institute's (AAMI) infrastructure serving as the foundation of the youth laboratory. AAMI Boys’ Choir, is a positive community-based alternative, enabling its members to experience the richness and excitement of creative expression. The benefits gained by the youth are discipline, confidence, motivation, and the continual building of their self-esteem. Additionally, the choir prepares members to be productive individuals allowing them to believe in themselves and their potential. They learn the value of friendship and the importance of respecting self and others. The choir has performed at major festivals, churches, universities, civic affairs and social organizations throughout the Metropolitan Pittsburgh area. Also the ensemble has performed on radio and television shows. In June of 2011, AAMI Boys Choir took the 1st place trophy in the National Boys Choir Competition in Louisville, Kentucky.
Jazz Lab is a special component of the AAMI curriculum. The ensemble consists of students from AAMI who excel on their particular instrument. The ensemble provides performance opportunities for youth who have studied instruction in composition, improvisation, basic theory, chart reading and ear training. Every Saturday from 3PM to 4PM, AAMI students get together under the supervision of Howie Alexander III to practice their ensemble skills. During these sessions they learn everything they need to play with a group including: how to have respectful musical conversations; feel the music; find the pocket; swing and solo. With jazz as our foundation, we also explore Gospel, R&B and Pop and the way in which jazz traditions contribute to musicality and how musicianship remains a critical skill to modern musicians.

Born in East Liberty, legendary jazz pianist and composer Ahmad Jamal transformed the genre with his distinctive style, earning both the National Endowment for the Arts’ Jazz Master Award and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. His innovative approach influenced generations of musicians, including Miles Davis. Jamal’s roots in Pittsburgh ran deep. He first studied piano as a child at the Dawson School of Music, just blocks from where the Afro American Music Institute (AAMI) stands today. Over the years, he maintained a close connection to AAMI, forming a bond with the Johnson family after hiring their son, James T. Johnson III, to play drums for him in the 1990s at the recommendation of Dr. Nelson Harrison. AAMI honors his legacy with an unforgettable evening of music, celebrating his artistry through performances by a stellar lineup of musicians. Featuring: Dr. James T.
